  5. Internet is Born • Arpanet(work) + NFS network Internet = Network of networks Connected by phone lines & trans-oceanic cables

  6. 1990s • Use of Internet by general public Funding changed making it more affordable (cheaper) Development of WWW (point & click) made it more user friendly (easier to use) Popularity of Internet exploded

  7. Internet or WWW? • Internet is network of networks • World wide web is: • a subset of the internet •a system of linked hypertext documents •a point & click system making easy web “surfing”

  8. Who Owns/Regulates the Internet? • No one “owns” the internet • W3 Consortium • Sets language & protocal • IANA -Internet Assigned Numbers Authority • Guarantees no two domain names are identical

  9. Using the Internet • Search engines/directories • FTP - (file transfer protocol) uploads/downloads in packets • URL - uniform resource locator • http://www.w3.org
