Our services concern the following groups of potential users: People with mental disorders Culturally differentiated populations (ROM, Muslims) Homeless Trafficked people Populations in underdevelopment countries (Iraq, Afghanistan) Other vulnerable populations

    3. 3 Our work with the homeless Regarding the phenomenon of homelessness, we have developed the following services: Street working unit Primary health care – emergent medical assistance Psychological assessment, counseling, social services Day center for the homeless Hostel (temporary accommodation) for 12 persons Establishing the documentation system (creation of a database, research activities)

    4. 4 Funding of our programmes Partially funded by the Greek Ministry of Health and Social Solidarity Important contribution of fund-raising, offers in goods (medical supplies, food, clothing) A network of volunteers who provide personal work

    5. 5 Dimensions of homelessness in Greece (I) Public attention to homelessness has a notable delay, as it is believed that homelessness is an a-typical phenomenon of the Greek society. There are no official statistics concerning the number of homeless people in Greece. The Government does not endorse the estimates of the NGO’s but on the other hand it has not yet suggested an alternative proposal.

    6. 6 Dimensions of homelessness in Greece (II) The number of homeless people in Greece is estimated by the work of several NGO’s at about 17.000, from which about 12.000 live in Athens.

    7. 7 Official national scale research The National Statistical Service has organised important surveys related to poverty and housing. The National Centre of Social Research conducted a research on the relationship between poverty and social exclusion. lack of data directly related to homelessness

    8. 8 Previous research outcomes – Mental illness and the homeless 2002 – survey conducted by KLIMAKA to assess the incidence of mental health disorders in a sample of 60 homeless people About 85% of the sample has been assessed as having active psychopathological or behavioural disorders A 19% of the total sample were substance abusers and 22,4% were alcoholics

    9. 9 2005 - "Homelessness in Greece: socio-psychological profile and living conditions in the streets of Athens and 3 other big Greek cities" Aim of the research: To obtain reliable knowledge about the scale, structure, and the reasons of homelessness in Greece. To write down in a concrete way the profile of the homeless people in Greece, to collect information about their living conditions.

    10. 10 Methodology Standardized questionnaire Randomized sample (one taken one left) between the users of the services (municipality or those by the several NGO’s). Athens (about 300 questionnaires) Thessalonica (about 100 questionnaires), Patras and Larissa (about 50 questionnaires in each town).
