Direct Injection Valve Cleaning : Current Situation • We believe the current situation with Direct Injection Engines reports as follows. • To our knowledge to date no company has currently got a solvent cleaning solution suitable for the successful cleaning of valves in Direct injection engines. • The current method of cleaning Valves in Direct injection Engines requires the removal of the valves and manual cleaning, • This method can take up to 27 hours.

Valve Stem Carbon Build up : Current Solution • GLR Injection Technologies have developed a family of solvents that has proven to successfully remove the build up of oil carbon from valves in Direct Injection Engines. • When the GLR method of application is followed using their proven family of solvents the following outcomes can be expected. • Removal of oil carbon from the Valve stem and back of the valve. • Injectors cleaned back to new spec with the removal of gums and varnishes that effect the spray pattern of the injectors • This process in most cases can be achieved in 2 hours.

Valve Stem Carbon Build Up : Suggested Alternative solution - Findings . • The problem we believe is caused by oil leaking down the valve stem seal / guide, then "coking" on the back of the valve and valve stem. • The two challenges faced to remove the coking are • Selecting the right family of solvents • Applying the correct method of applying the solvents. • After 3 attempts GLR have demonstrated that they have found the right family of solvents and have been successful in the method of application • We suggest that the problem can be resolved by using the method GLR has pioneered on the third attempt. At 15,000 kms all that would be required is 20 minutes of soaking and compressed air. At 30,000 kms it will require 30 to 40 minutes soaking, for the vehicles over 60,000 kms 60 minutes soaking. • We would recommend at the 30,000 km service the coke build-up would justify the process be used ( before it causes drivability problems). • GLR also recommends that at every 15,000 kms service a can of GLR injector cleaner be added to the fuel system for two reasons, 1) the obvious, clean the injectors. 2) The turbulence in the valve housing ( caused by valve overlap) will allow some of the injector cleaner to soften the coke on the back of the valve and valve stem.

Conclusion : Suggested Application • Remove the manifold and soak the valves with the GLR Valve cleaning solvent. • At 15,000 kms soak for 20 minutes and then blow of the solvent with compressed air using the tool supplied. • At 30,000 kms soak for 40 minutes then remove as above. • Over 60,000 kms soak for 60 minutes and remove as above. • Note : To supplement this process GLR recommends that a 350ml can of Petrol injector cleaner be added to the fuel tank. • Products to be used : • D I Valve Cleaner • DI Cleaner application Tool • GLR Injector Cleaner
