  6. About the Book The Outsiders is a novel by S.E. Hinton, published in 1967. Hinton was 15 when she began writing the novel and she was 17 when she got it published. The outsiders is the life story of fourteen-year-old Ponyboy Michael Curtis. Hinton explores a multitude of themes throughout the story, such as friendship, and coming age. They are seen by two groups, the Greasers and the socs (said "soashes" by the author, short for Socials), who are separated by status.

  7. S.E. Hinton , is one of the most popular and best known writers of young adult fiction. Her books have been taught in some schools, and some schools do not care about it. Her novels changed the way people look at young adult literature. Susan Eloise Hinton was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She has always enjoyed reading but wasn't satisfied with the literature that was being written for young adults, which influenced her to write novels like The Outsiders. That book, her first novel was published in 1967 Once published, The Outsiders gave her a lot of publicity and fame, and also a lot of pressure. S.E. Hinton was becoming known as "The Voice of the Youth" among other titles. This kind of pressure and publicity resulted in a three year long writer's block.

  8. The Greasers While the Socs live carefree lives of privilege, The Greasers all come from dangerous backgrounds. They like to listen to the music of Elvis Presley and think the Beatles are "out". Their attire usually consists of tight fitting t-shirts, leather jackets, and snug jeans. Some greasers are involved in criminal activities, which causes many people to incorrectly assume that all Greasers are juvenile delinquents . Many of the Greasers have problems at home. The Greasers dislike the Socs.

  9. The Socs • The Socs are the nickname of the "Socials," the West Side rich kids. Ponyboy tells in the book that they drive nice cars like Mustangs, Corvais, and Carovetts , and learns that the Soc girls he meets are partial to the Beatles instead of Elvis. The Socs are known to jump the greasers on the East side of town. They throw beer blasts for fun.
