  2. Where we are today • ESE infusion initiative & ESE working group • Greening OISE group • Sustainability Advisory Committee • ESE graduate student group • Dr. Eric Jackman Institute for Child Studies EE project • ESE research • ESE courses (graduate, ITE courses)

ESE Infusion Initiative • Infusion Workshops for teacher candidates • 60-90 minutes • most students (approx. 1000) receive this in 2011-12 as part of TES course • led by a doctoral student • ESE Co-curricular Events • ESE-related Internships • Development of ESE Resources • Website www.oise.utoronto.ca/ese • Free Green Teacher subscription for all ITE students • Library collection being developed

Also related to pre-service • Greening OISE group • Comprised of faculty and teacher candidates • Organize events and projects, e.g. Eco Fair and used cell phone collection • Institute for Child Studies EE Project • Delivers workshops on getting children outdoors and building their questions into lesson planning

From our Learner Document-graduates from our programs will begin to demonstrate the capacity to; • Develop a personal philosophy of education that embodies principles of equity, diversity, inclusion, social justice and environmental justice. • Understand themselves as change agents and community members committed to act in socially just and environmentally responsible ways. • Understand that curriculum planning and delivery are embedded in political, social, cultural and environmental contexts.

Starting from scratch… • 2008/09 • SAC starts upgrading building • only 3-4 instructors infusing ESE into subject courses • a few workshops being offered by Jane Forbes • 2009/10 • OISE provides TEPA and Work Study student for support • Infusion workshops developed • Greening OISE starts annual EcoFair and Clothing Swaps • 2010/11 • Co-curricular learning continues to be developed • ESE website is developed and launched • 2011/12 • OISE endorses and financially supports ESE Initiative • most students receive an ESE workshop as part of program • ESE Action Plan includes course infusions; instructor PD; co-curricular learning; resource development; advocacy projects; start of learning garden

  10. ESE Working Group • a communications hub for faculty interested in ESE • facilitates the infusion of ESE into programs, events and courses • offers PD opportunities in ESE at OISE • develops ESE resources for faculty, staff and students • liaises with other faculties of ed about ESE

Environmental Learning at OISE • Graduate courses in CTL, AECP, SESE (Erminia Pedretti, Larry Bencze, Jennifer Sumner, Gary Knowles, Dorothy Goldin-Rosenberg, Terezia Zoric) • ITE Related Studies course – Exploring ESE (Hilary Inwood) • ESE infused into B.Ed courses (various OISE instructors)

  12. Greening OISE • led by Jane Forbes and Judith Burt [jane.forbes@utoronto.ca] • Events for students, by students • Walk-in Closets • Used cell phone collection • Eco-Fair in January

  13. Sustainability Advisory Committee • will be led by our new CAO • focuses on OISE’s physical facilities • recent projects include: • changing out lights to timers or motion sensors, low wattage bulbs • energy conservation • green bins • solar film on windows • water bottle filler on 5th floor

  14. ESE Grad Student Group • led by Erin Sperling • currently working on the creation of a learning garden for OISE

  15. Institute for Child Studies • led by Andrea Cousineau • major ESE project for K-6 finished last year • new book ‘Natural Curiosity’, available online at; http://www.naturalcuriosity.ca/
