  2. Cleaning Tools – Two Main Types • Tools that remove loose dirt and dust (Dust mop, broom, vacuum cleaner, dusting cloth) • Tools that remove soil stuck to surfaces (Sponges, pails, wet mop, toilet bowl brush, step-ladder/stool).

  3. Products • Chemicals aid your cleaning tasks; seek environmental friendly (green) products; some may contain Disinfectant which is a cleaning agent that destroys bacteria. • The three basic kinds are: 1.Glass cleaner 2. Grease-cutting liquids 3. mild abrasive powder • Multi-purpose= can be used for more than one purpose

Basic Cleaning Rules • Check to see if your products can be used for more than one purpose • Check labels to see if product is toxic, poisonous, or flammable • Check to see if product will harm a surface. Not all products are safe for all surfaces • Follow directions of the product • NEVER MIX PRODUCTS • Store away from children and pets • Wear protective gloves

Schedule • Organization of time and/or people for cleaning the home; when? who? • Daily-make bed, wash dishes…. • Weekly-dolaundry,change bed lines, wash kitchen floor, dust, vacuum • Monthly- clean refrigerator, range, hardwood floors, vacuum upholstered furniture, blinds • Semiannual- clean closets, wash walls, wash woodwork • If facilities are used more often; then, they will need more cleaning

  7. Carpet Cleaning Techniques • Keep your carpet clean by vacuuming once or twice weekly • Small area rugs can be shaken to remove dirt.

  8. Upholstery Cleaning Techniques • Vacuum on a regular basis • Check in all of the folds of the sofa

  9. Wall and Wallpaper Cleaning Techniques • Vacuum cobwebs weekly • Wash walls with an all-purpose cleaner. Test on an discrete place first • Vinyl wallpaper can usually be gently cleaned with a sponge and mild detergent. Test on an extra piece first • Faded wallpaper that is beginning to peel away should be removed.

  17. Roof, Gutters, Downspouts • Accumulated leaves and branch cause excess moisture that causes rot • Tree limbs too close to house can scrape and loosen shingles, gutters, and downspouts • Check roofs every 6 months for loose shingles.

  18. Gutters & Downspouts • Gutters and downspouts are made from wood, vinyl, or any of several different metals, including aluminum, galvanized steel, stainless steel, and copper. Wood gutters are virtually obsolete, except in restoration work

  19. Keep gutters and downspouts clear. Check after a heavy storm or heavy leaf fall • If water cannot properly flow off the roof, it will backup into attic spaces and wall cavities, causing rot, mold, and termites.

  20. Exterior Walls Wood siding must be: • monitored for rot and replaced as needed • painted or stained on regular basis to protect the wood from sun, wind, and rain.

  22. Vinyl siding needs to be washed and checked for loose boards

  23. Brick mortar must be checked on a regular basis. • “Pointing up”is the term for replacing the mortar.

  24. Stucco walls require washing to eliminate mold and mildew

  25. ALL homes need to be checked for termites annually • Termites feed on wood especially wood that is holding water.

  26. Window and Doors • Need regular cleaning and checking for rot • Need to be inspected to make sure they are properly caulked and sealed • Caulk prevents air leakage, which is a major cause of higher heating and cooling costs.

  27. Weather stripping should also be replaced as it wears out over time.

  28. Driveways • Check for and repair cracks and deterioration • Pressure wash to remove excess dirt and algae • Apply water sealants to repel moisture

  29. Decks, Porches, and Terraces • Check for rot and damage • Pressure wash, paint and stain as needed • Check railings and stairs to make sure they are safe, secure, and not damaged.

  34. Repairing Nail Hole- wall • Use a putty knife and fill the nail holes with joint compound mixture or spackling compound.  • Allow the compound to dry completely. Sand the filled hole area with a fine grit sandpaper block. Sand the area flat and flush with the wall. • Paint the repaired nail hole areas with the wall color or primer

  35. Repair Plumbing Repairing leaking compression faucets – • Turn off water under sink • Use slip-joint pliers to remove the retaining nut that holds the stem in place 3. Slide new O-ring into place using a screwdriver as a guide

Clogged drains • Most common cause is foreign matter – grease & hair – they usually occur where two pipes are fitted together with a fitting, creating a change of direction. • One cleaning method is chemical drain cleaner available in liquid or crystals. They are poisonous and caustic (burn skin) • They should be used only as directed

  37. If drain is completely clogged a flat plumbing plunger may need to be used • To keep drains clog free pour boiling water down the drains twice a week.

Repairing Electrical • Most common cause of electrical problem is a short circuit that is an undesirable current path that allows electrical current to bypass the load of the circuit. • Circuit Breakers Activate when the circuit is overloaded. The breaker switching to the off position and interrupts the power.

  39. Wall Switches wear out as they get older. Make sure you know how to work with electrical wiring before you attempt repair • Power cord plugs damaged or worn electric plugs must be replaced before using them.

  40. Weather Stripping • A strip of material that covers the edges of a window or door to prevent moisture and air from entering moisture and air from entering the house.

  45. Extended Warranty • For an extra fee you can purchase addition years of coverage to the manufacturer’s warranty.
