SAILING WHEN THE WATERS ARE CHOPPY • Pessimist – Complains about the conditions. • Optimist – Hopes the conditions will change. • Realist – Adjusts the sails. • Purpose of today’s session • Identify the conditions • Prepare to adjust the sails
ADJUST THE SAILS • A IS FOR ACCOUNTABILITY • “Test” is truly a four letter word in education! • Most educators identify with the Einstein quote: • “Not everything that counts can be counted and not everything that can be counted counts.” • Myth – Parents are aware of achievement results. • Fact – Most school decisions are based on convenience.
ADJUST THE SAILS • D IS FOR DIVERSITY • Sioux Falls School District • 1996 - 97 – White = 91% Diverse = 9% • 2008 – 09 – White = 78% Diverse = 22% • Statewide numbers – Native American • 1998 12,324 9.41% • 2008 14,112 11.66%
