Political • In 510 B.C.E., Athens created the first direct democratic government • The Athens did not give power to everyone, most people couldn’t vote – woman, slaves, and children were outlaws • Athens had an empire ruling over many Greek city – states and none of the people living in those city – states could vote • Athens elected a number of officials to do all the different jobs of their government. This is called a Bureaucracy

Economic$ Greece is a country surrounded by water and the sea has always played an important role in its history The ancient Athenians were active seafarers seeking opportunities for trade and founding new independent cities at coastal sites across the Mediterranean Sea. By the seventh and sixth centuries B.C., colonies and settlements of Athenian and Spartan rule stretched all the way from western Asia Minor to southern Italy, Sicily, North Africa, and even to the coasts of southern France and Spain Regional schools of artists exhibited a rich variety of styles and preferences at this time

Geographic The land area is 39 km² Lots of rain during mid October and mid April They are surrounded by mountains: the Aigaleo to the west, Parnes to the north, Pentelikon to the northeast, and Hymettus to the east. The city is on the Ilissus River, which is dry for most of the year and has lots of water, after winter

Social Lead the Delian League in the Peloponnesian War against Sparta Was the creator of democracy and western civilization, after tyrants proved to be a bad idea They believe in polytheism, where the main deity was Zeus ad Hera Many believed in both a balance of body and mind, meaning that to both be strong and fit, but also intellectually capable
