  1. Fashion Lab Safety HNC 3OI

  2. Rule Number One • Students are not to use any equipment unless a teacher is present. • Do not operate a piece of equipment if you have never been personally instructed on how to use it safely by Ms. Storkey

  3. Rule number two • Report damage or defective equipment or safety hazards to Ms. Storkey immediately !!!!

  4. Rule Number Three • Keep your sewing area neat and tidy. Keep all backpacks, purses and books on your chair in the DESK area pushed in: NOT ON THE FLOOR OR THE TABLES PLEASE! • You will be given a bin for your materials that you are responsible for, should you break, damage or lose these loaned items you are responsible for replacing them. Please keep it neat and tidy!

  5. Rule Number four • Long hair, loose clothing, and jewelry must be tied back or removed. • THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD!

  6. Rule Number five • Place all electrical cords out of the way so they are not a tripping hazard. • Do no unplug equipment by pulling on the cords, be cautious when unplugging the sewing machine cords as they are fragile. • Never operate machinery that has damaged cords or plugs.

  7. Rule number six • Ensure that your sewing machine is turned off and properly stored at the end of each lab, they must be UNPLUGGED and have their covers on them prior to you leaving the classroom? • Why you ask? Dust effects the running of the machine…. TRUST ME IT IS NECESSARY!

  8. Rule Number Seven • REPORT ALL ACCIDENTS TO MS. STORKEY IMMEDIATELY, IT IS A HEALTHY AND SAFETY MATTER THAT GOES BEYOND THE CLASSROOM!

  9. Rule Number eight • One student at a time should be at an ironing board, irons are extremely hot and you need to pay careful attention it is not a place for socialization as you could damage your fabric or get badly burnt

  10. Rule Number Nine • Keep pins and needles out of your mouth! • Use a pin cushion and ensure you pick up an dropped or stray pins

  11. Rule number Ten • Should the fire alarm sound ensure all machines are turned off before vacating the premises

  12. Rule Number Elven • NO CELL PHONES! NO IPODS! • Sound evil, I know. However I must be able to instruct you all at once and you will need to hear me if I am to help you with your projects. Also I have often caught students prior to making grave mistakes if they had head phones in this would not have been possible. • Lastly, it is a SAFETY ISSUE, no dangling cords are permitted near my machines. • Cell phones are unnecessary distractions, sewing machines are considered to be power tools and I would hate for you to sew your hand to the machine due to a distraction.

  13. Rule Number Twelve • Have fun, learn lots and be safe  • We will sometimes have music going, or a TV show or a movie on in the background once I am more comfortable with your skill level!
