Loyalist- American who felt a deep loyalty to Great Britain

Patriots- American who believed that the colonies had the right to govern themselves.

Neutralist- A colonist who wanted to remain part of Great Britain, but also wanted independence.

Boycott- refusal to buy goods from a certain source

Tyranny- unjust use of government power.

  • Militia- A small army made up of ordinary citizens who are available to fight in an emergency.
  • Taxes- monies paid for goods, such as: paper, tea, and sugar.
  • Tariffs- a tax on imported goods.
  • Acts- laws or actions put into place by rulers.
  • Sons of Liberty- Mainly lawyers, merchants, and craftspeople. Staged protests against the Acts.

  • Declaration of Independence- declaring independence from Britain. Would become an official document.
  • Writs of Assistance- search warrants, used to enter homes to search for smuggled goods.
  • Treaty- A formal agreement among nations.
  • Committee of Correspondence- a group of people in the colonies who exchanged letters on colonial affairs.
  • Traitor- A person guilty of the crime of treason, or disloyalty to the government

  • Hessians- 18th century German soldiers used in the American Revolutionary War
  • Continental Congress- brought together delegates from the colonies to discuss colonial issues (in Philadelphia).
  • Minuteman- A New England militia. Ready to fight when needed.
  • Guerillas- Soldiers who operate on their own and are not part of a regular army.
  • Ally- a nation that joins another nation in some common effort, such as winning a war.
