FIELD DAY 2013 AT AA5RO Roger Reini, KD8CSE September 2013
Why AA5RO? • Traveling in Texas during Field Day weekend • AA5RO site on my path from west Texas to Houston • Russell Park in NW San Antonio
Site Details • Public park • One-day operation, had to vacate by midnight • Used permanent pavilion for main gathering and food area
Station Setup • 5A Operation: 1 CW, 1 Digital, 1 40m, 1 20m, 1 10m • Buddipole used for 20 m station – 16 ft mast • HF SSB rigs were devoted to particular bands, unlike our SSB stations
Station Setup (continued) • One of two loop antennas used by the digital station • QRM on PSK was tremendous; all of the signals were on top of each other
Media Coverage • One of the San Antonio TV stations paid a visit to the AA5RO operation • Report made the station website; not sure if it made the broadcast
Observations on Operation • One-day operation means a top score can’t be attained; but top scores aren’t necessarily the point of Field Day • Devoting radios to particular bands seems overly limiting at first glance, but antennas can be precisely tuned
