  1. Dual Language FAQs 5th grade 2017-18 Bilingual/ESL Department

  2. Will there be dual language for 5th grade? • Yes- Starting 2017-18, the students in the Dual Language pilot program at Carleston and Magnolia will attend Jamison Middle School.

  3. Transportation? • ALL DL students zoned to Jamison will follow current transportation guidelines. • If your child is not zoned to Jamison, you may still continue in the Dual Language program at Jamison; however, you must provide your own transportation.

  4. 5th grade schedule • Daily schedule will resemble current 4th grade model • Reading/Language Arts - 2 days (per week) will be instructed in English and 2 days in Spanish, 5th day (Friday) could be in either English or Spanish – depending on student needs • Math- English only • Science- Spanish only • Social Studies- Spanish only • Elective: Exploratory Spanish, all Dual Language students will be enrolled in this course

  5. Can dual language students opt out of exploratory Spanish? • No- all Dual Language students will participate in the Spanish Exploratory coursein 5th grade • Exploratory Spanish (5th) will focus on cultural aspects of the language. It is the beginning step towards achieving Spanish AP credit in 8th grade and is built on Spanish Language TEKS.

  6. Can My child participate in both Dl and advanced math? • Yes, if you request advanced math on your child’s ?????? Form, counselors will place your child in that course. • There are no other advanced classes offered in the DL schedule because all other content areas will be provided in Spanish which is advanced coursework.

  7. What about band? • The band elective is not offered in 5th grade. It is a possible elective starting in 6th.
