Have you ever wondered why lecture theatres are designed like this? Keynes Lecture Theatre 6, University of Kent
…it seems like we have been taught like this since the beginning…
…churches like to put people in lines… …churches like to put people in lines… …churches like to put people in lines…
…churches have people who preach…
…amongst other things, they are called patriarchs…
…patriarchs… …Patriarch (Gr. patriarches; Lat. patriarcha) means the father or chief of a race (patria, a clan or family)… …the father… …the father… …Patriarchate (Gr. patriarcheia; Lat. patriarchatus) is the derived word meaning a patriarch's office, see, reign, or, most often, the territory he governs. …he… …he… …he…
A patriarch may a also be a woman…
…saturated with patriarchy …made for patriarchs…
Maybe the first thing to do is to name the space, to question it’s patriarchal nature by labeling it…
…other stickers said… This is not a chair it is a disciplinary tool. Think inside the box. I will be asleep in 20 minutes. This is not a learning environment. Why can I not look behind me? Why am I not the authority figure? Look at me I am the knowledge. Knowledge can not be delivered (like a pizza). Learning is a communal activity. There is no such thing as justice. Why am I sitting in a church? That’s not a lecture, that’s a prayer. I am here to learn not to be judged. My mind deserves more. Sit down! Switch off! Powerpoint is not thinking. Bullet points oppress me as a woman.
It could be different. This is a masculine space. This is a heterosexual space. Where’s the woman? Ask a question, I dare you? My mind will be out of order for the next hour. Male or female lecturer, it’s still a priest. You are sitting on a disciplinary device. Nobody knows what I am thinking. Pay homage to the knowledge. Knowledge is not power it is oppression. Knowledge may be power but ignorance is bliss. It’s all about money isn’t it? I’m a square peg in a square hole. Woman is not in the room. Woman is the other to this space. University is the new church. Will this chair help me to learn? Chairs are designed for stacking not learning.
Is this a seat of learning? What will go to sleep first, my bottom or my brain? I think therefore I sit? I am multitasking: note-taking and fantasising. Is sedentary a learning style? Great minds think differently. Is compliance learning? The compliant mind is a blank mind. Do you really think this type of learning will make me a good citizen? The power is in front of me. The architecture is the power I face. Seated and voiceless. I am a cushion. Expediency over ergonomics. Learning is best done through conversation.
All we ask is… …can we imagine a different kind of learning?
