  2. What is RedMeat? Theterm“redmeat”hasaverysimpledefinition:Fleshfroma mammal that is red when it is raw. Examples include beef, pork, lamb, venison, moose, elk, goat, andbuffalo. In gastronomy, red meat is commonly red when raw and a dark color after it is cooked, in contrast to white meat,which is pale in color before and aftercooking. 2

  4. Benefits ofRed Meat Red meat has a high nutrient density as compared to white meat and veggies. Thismeansthatredmeatcarriesawidevarietyofnutrientsinarelativelysmall amount of food. Also, red meat is a major source of protein. It is also an important source of B vitamins, including B12, a vitamin that is not found naturally in foods of plant origin. Meat also contributes minerals and trace elements to the diet, particularly zinc andiron. Toensureahealthy,balanceddietawidevarietyoffoodsshouldbeincludedin the diet from the different food groups illustrated on the balanced plate in our resourcessection. 4
