  2. Objectives • Introduce the AAFP’s Future of Family Medicine Project • Introduce the USAFP’s Future of Military Family Medicine Project • Introduce three talks on the FMFM in action. • Discuss where we go next

AAFP Future of Family Medicine • In March 2004, the AA FP published the Future of Family Medicine • The object was to, “…give family physicians a compass to direct us so that we can get off this hamster wheel and get reimbursed for the value that we bring to the system.” • There were ten major recommendations regarding the practice of Family Medicine.

  4. Major Recommendations (1 of 2) • New model of family medicine • Electronic health records • Family Medicine Education • Lifelong Learning • Enhancing the Science of Family Medicine • Quality of Care

  5. Major Recommendations (2 of 2) • Role in academic health centers • Promoting a sufficient Family Medicine work force • Communications • Leadership & advocacy

  6. Why a Future of Military Family Medicine? (1 of 2) • We have similar productivity pressures • Military Family Physicians are seen as very valuable in operational settings… but the Tricare mission often contradicts our operational mission. • We have AHLTA • We are losing too many good people

  7. Why a Future of Military Family Medicine? (2 of 2) • We need to have a long-range plan to attract people to Family Medicine, retain them & grow new leaders in the specialty. • We need to share best practices for providing care while not burning out people. • We need to be respected for what we bring to military medicine. • We need to foster primary care research.

  8. The FMFM Project • Undertaken in 2006 • Tri-service effort • Covers all areas of AAFP FOFM plus military-unique topics • Document to Board of Directors for review twice – revisions made • Full document & executive summary to members in May 2007.
