My Journey (family support) (school/ mentor support) Kullali/Wakka Wakka woman, youngest of 9 I grew up in Townsville Completed High School Cert at Townsville Grammar School Started Bachelor of Laws @ JCU in 2001 Commenced cadetship with DEWR Completed Law degree and moved to Canberra to work for DEEWR Legal Branch as Government Lawyer and in 2 years became Snr Government Lawyer Now giving back to the community by influencing policy/programs for Indigenous students (Opportunity and financial assistance) (pathway support/employer support) (employer support/cultural appreciation)

  3. WHY? In 2006, year 12 completions for Indigenous Australians were 45.3% compared to 86.3% for non-Indigenous Australians Of the students who did complete year 12, 40% of those were not retained on a pathway 6 months after they left school In 2007, only 42.9% of Indigenous 17 year olds attended secondary school, compared with 65% of non-Indigenous 17 year olds In 2006 (last census) around 48% of the Indigenous workforce-aged population was in employment, this compares to 72% of other Australians. The latest population statistics tell us that the Indigenous population is very young, an average of 21.

  6. Year 12 Destinations • DEEWR & DET partnership • Supports all students in QLD • Funding is for Indigenous Pathway Coordinators in each EQ region • Supports year 12 students with greater access to information to transition from school to work successfully

IYCP Quick Guide... $50.7m over 4 years (approx 6000 places)– up to $8,800 each participant, small fixed component and competitive fee component Program is assessed and generally administered nationally, QLD State Office with Contract Manage the projects School Based Traineeships & Apprenticeships (SBTs) Only Provider must be direct employer, Registered Training Organisation, Group Training Organisation or strong links to one Placement and retention of SBTs and wrap around support, including post-school support 2012 Transition Year – Request for Quote complete for current IEP SBT places and 147 new places in QLD released in purchasing regions 2013 will be the first full year of the program – consultation will occur early in 2012 and full Request for Tender and program guidelines intended for July 2013

Advantages of IYCP • Students complete secondary school with a formal qualification and practical work experience • The Program recognises a role for wrap around support and assistance • The Program focuses on regional trends as far as labour market regions and school enrolments dictate • The Program separates school students from other Indigenous employment participants, such as the mature aged and long term unemployed
