  1. Number and Algebra yr 7-9 (2) Alison Fagan Maths advisor

  2. Feed back from last course: Number What activities have you tried from last time What modifications did you make? How did it go?

  3. Number • fractions • number sense • ratio

  4. Fraction starter Fill in the following columns

  5. And then this one

  6. Number activities • Numbers that make numbers • Number wall • Peaches today • Fraction card game • Percentage politics • Ratio, proportional puzzles

  7. Number activities For each activity • Decide if it is suitable as an assessment • If appropriate develop an assessment schedule

  8. (i) A little monkey had 60 peaches. On the first day he decided to keep 3/4 of his peaches. He gave the rest away. Then he ate one. On the second day he decided to keep 7/11 of his peaches. He gave the rest away. Then he ate one. On the third day he decided to keep 5/9 of his peaches. He gave the rest away. Then he ate one. On the fourth day he decided to keep 2/7 of his peaches. He gave the rest away. Then he ate one. On the fifth day he decided to keep 2/3 of his peaches. He gave the rest away. Then he ate one. How many did he have left at the end?

  9. Use fraction cards to play a game

  10. “Traditional” ways of solving ratio problems • Within measures • Between measures • Unit Rate

  11. Cookinga chicken takes 10 minutes for every 500g. How long to cook a 2.5kg chicken. How would this problem be solvedin each of these ways?

  12. Within measure 50 mins

  13. Between measure 50 mins divide by 50

  14. Unit measure 50 mins

  15. Solve this problem You can make 6 glasses of lemonade with 8 lemons. How many glasses can you make with 28 lemons? In each of the 3 ways

  16. Percentage politics On Mathland TV a political commentator summed up an election result as follows. A Labour majority of 1729 last time has been turned into a National majority of 1654 in this election and the National candidate has obtained 38% of the poll. Labour has taken second place. The NZ Party has obtained only 14% of the poll and has been beaten into fourth place by the Greens candidate who has 50 more votes than the NZ Party. Given that there were just four candidates and that the figures quoted were exact find the number of votes polled for each candidate

  17. Algebra • introduction • generalising • patterns

  18. Feed back from last course: Algebra What activities have you tried from last time What modifications did you make How did it go?

  19. Generalisation from Number 7 + 8 = 6 + 7 +  = 6 + 4 7 +  = 6 +  7 + 8 =  + 

  20. What happens for Subtraction? Develop a similar sequence for subtraction

  21. Algebra activities • Building borders • Julius squarius • Hopping mad

  22. Patterns Finding rules Look for a common difference Find what number needs to be added or subtracted to make the rule work b = 3a + 2

  23. Write a rule for this pattern

  24. Write a rule for this pattern

  25. Year 7 Standard

  26. Year 8 Standard
