  5. Common Elements in Anointing • Prayers • A penitential rite • Readings from Scriptures • Laying on of hands by priest • Anointing with oil on forehead and hands by priest • Holy Communion

  6. What is ESSENTIAL? The anointing of by the priest of the person’s forehead and hands while praying these words: “Through this holy anointing may the Lord in his love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit. Amen. May the Lord who frees you from sin save you and raise you up. Amen.”

  7. Symbolic Actions • Reconciliation • Anointing with oil • Laying on of hands • Holy Communion

  8. What do they symbolize? • Reconciliation: restoring a person’s harmony with others and God • The forehead is associated with mental powers and the hands of physical strength • The oil has been blessed by a bishop which connects us to the wider church • Scriptures and prayers connect us to the healing actions of Jesus • Laying of the hands the healing that takes place as part of a community

  9. Holy Communion • Holy Communion given to a dying person is known as viaticum --- (from the Latin via = way and cum = with) it is offered to a dying person as nourishment for the journey to God

  10. History Of Anointing • The Letter of James: Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. The prayer of faith will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to one another, so that you may be healed. The power of the righteous is powerful and effective.

  11. Early Church • Any Christian can pray over sick people • Oil covered the body, sometimes they drank it! • They started to believe it was a magic potion • By the 12th century changes begin to happen • Priests become more involved • And…….

  12. Preparation for Death • Penance becomes associated with the sacrament and it is seen as a preparation for death…. • 12th century it is called “Extreme Unction”= last anointing.

  13. Second Vatican Council • CCHHHHHHHaaaangggneessssss http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pl3vxEudif8 YEAAAAA! Original purpose of healing is restored
