  1. Anointing of the Sick Patrick Hubert Ben Smith

  2. Roots in Scripture • There are many examples of Jesus healing others in the Bible. • He heals in many ways • He took the pain away from us and was healed himself in Resurrection • Here are some examples in the Bible: • “I myself will pasture my sheep… the sick I will heal…”(Ezekiel 34:15-16) • Jesus healed by only his hand in Luke 7:7

  3. Symbols • Oil of the Sick • Sign of the Cross • Forehead • Hands • Laying on of Hands • These symbols point to something beyond themselves, they point to God’s Grace

  4. Evolution • Anointing of the Sick has been used since the beginning of the Church. • Oil has always been an important part • The original use of the Sacrament was to strengthen and heal the ill • For a while, it was used only for those who were going to die • Vatican II restored it to its original purpose of healing and strengthening all those who are ill

  5. How it puts Jesus in our lives • Anointing of the sick helps us renew and establish our relationship with Jesus • It puts ministry and comfort into the ill • We look to see those who Jesus helps and it strengthens our faith in him

  6. Relationship with the Paschal Mystery • Jesus conquered the consequences of Original Sin through His Paschal Mystery. • Sin, death, sickness, and suffering are only temporary because of Jesus. • We align our suffering with Jesus’s and our suffering paves the way to everlasting joy
