  2. Goals for the Semester My goal is to maximize your learning experience and to help you develop as a learner How will we do this?...

  3. Learning by doing • Connecting science to real world examples • Creating an environment that is optimum for you to learn in • Asking questions, and then INVESTIGATING to answer them • Class discussions to look at studies and facts from different view points

  4. Thinking Skills • Critical thinking - reasonable, reflective thinking that is aimed at deciding what to believe or what to do • Is it legal for a man in California to marry his widow's sister? • 2) Analytic Skills - Gathering information and making a prediction/conclusion based on the information provided • 3) Investigative skills- When faced with a question, knowing what other questions to ask and procedures to follow in order to determine the answers you are looking for

Examples “How could they have done this study differently, to be more accurate?” – Critical Thinking “If a plant is left in the dark it will die, therefore plants need light to live” – Analytic Thinking (inference and observation) “When you heat something up the particles move faster. So I predict when you heat up the can of water the air pressure will increase” – Analytic Thinking “How could I create an experiment to determine what types of materials conduct electricity and which do not?”- Investigative

  6. Areas of Evaluation • Knowledge and Understanding (Facts ) • Thinking and Inquiry (Problem solving ) • Communication (Expressing ideas/concepts) • Application (Demonstrating how learned concepts are used in real life examples)

  7. For US to maximize your learning, you need to: • Show up • Be Respectful • Try Your Best

  8. Being Respectful • One person talks at a time • Follow instructions (from whoever is in charge) the first time they are given • Be open-minded and respectful of others thoughts and opinions • Be encouraging, and do not impose on the learning of your classmates

  9. Terms you need to know • Success Criteria - A checklist of what you need to complete in order to be successful on an assignment • Learning Goals – What you will be able to do by the end of the days lesson • Descriptive Feedback – My feedback on what you have done correctly and ways you can improve your work

  10. Routine for the Day • Complete the brain teaser on the board - develop critical thinking skills • Take up yesterdays homework (if there was any) • Review the Learning Goals for the day • Lesson for the day – Experiment, class discussion, Lab, Demo, • Reflect on and verify what you learnt from the lesson

  11. OUR LEARNING MODEL • Predict – “I think this will happen because…” • Observe – “This is what happened…” • Explain – “This is why it happened…”
