  4. Examples of Metric System: • Liter- a liter pop • -liter of Mrs. Webb’s water • Gram- a paper clip • Kilogram- your math book • Meter- long as a baseball bat • Centimeter- across your fingernail

  5. Measurement • Measure things all the time • Allows us to figure out to take from one place to another • Know when something fit-you measure it first • Measurement around the world-America, Britain, London (all the same measurement)

Matter • Anything that takes up space and has mass • Can be air • Has properties (a characteristic of something that you can observe) • ex/texture, shape, size, color, purpose, buoyancy, hardness, luster, • smell • Matter is NOT: Color, numbers, letters, ideas, words • Ex/red, number 13, month of January • Ex/Red isn’t small, hard, or warm. Red is not made into shape.

  7. Buoyancy A property that is the upward force of water or liquid or air that keeps things afloat

  8. Is it Matter? • Mass - a property • -measured in units called Kilograms (kg) or g (grams) • -Tool used is balance or scale

  9. Phases or Forms or States of Matter • Solid- has a definite shape, has definite amount of space • EX/ scarf piece of paper pudding play-doh ice textbook • popsicle • particles of matter made of solid are packed tightly • Molecules or particles are dense and hardly moved

  10. 2. Liquid- no shapes of its own, but yes to volume EX/ water juice milk koolaid gasoline for car • Molecules are not as dense • Move more freely

  11. 3. Gas- does not have a definite shape and does not take up a definite amount of space EX/ Balloon is made of helium-takes shape in a balloon. When the balloon pops the helium spreads out in the air. Water Vapor and air bubbles are other examples of gas • Molecules are not dense • Move more freely • Particles can move past one another

  12. What happens to Matter? • Burn it • Dump it in Ocean • Bury it in landfill

  13. What Should we do? 1. REDUCE- the number of things you use to become garbage 2. REUSE- try to use again EX/ milk jug, plastic container cans 3. Recycle- start with one thing, and make it into another thing; can be made into something else Ex/ plastic, paper, aluminum, glass, boxes

  14. How To MEASURE MATTER? Metric System- Is a system of measurement based on units of 10.

  15. Length • Lengthis the number of units that fit along an edge • In metric system- the units of length are based on meter • In English system, the length are based on yards (1 yard= 36 inches (3ft)

  16. Area • Measurement that describes the number of unit squares that fit inside a surface • Measured in units such as square centimeters or square inches

  17. Volume • Amount of SPACE an object takes up • Measures the number of cubes that fit into an object Height: 5 cm Length: 5 cm Width: 5 cm Volume: 5 cm x 5 cm x 5cm= 125 cm3

  18. Volume Liquids in gradual cylinder Ex/ -70 mL 100= 100 mL 2. L x w x h 5 cm x 10 cm x 7 cm = 350 cm3 =350 cubic centimeters

Physical and Chemical Changes Physical Change- begins and end with the same type of matter Ex/Melting of an ice cube- made of solid water at then if the ice cube is crushed into small pieces (matter wouldn’t change)-the smaller pieces would be frozen water. If you melt the ice cube- matter wouldn’t change and be liquid. Ex/If you shred a piece of paper, it’s still a physical change because it’s still paper even though you changed the size. Ex/ Popcorn Ex/ Clouds (Water vapor in clouds cool and become a liquid- falls to ground as rain)

Chemical Change- • It is a change that produces new matter with different properties from the original matter • Can also be called Chemical Reaction • Involves energy (take in or give off energy—examples are • form of electricity, light, or heat) • Ex/ the Penny experiment- the class made the penny change • from copper to copper acetate-we used a drop of vinegar • (that’s chemical reaction) • Ex/ Burning a piece of paper (no longer paper) to ashes (different properties-like new matter) • Ex/ Dissolving salt in water Ex/ Digesting food
