The Medical Device Industry • Global market size of $273.3 billion. • Forecast to reach $348.6 billion by 2016. • Total NHS spend of £6.3 billion on medical devices. • Global R&D spend of $138 billion. • UK R&D spend of $527 million. • Split between Private sector, Universities, NHS, Charities.

NHS & Academic Partnerships • Many of the best ideas come from outside of the healthcare industry and collaborating with NHS staff and academics should be a fundamental part of any companies strategy. • This should involve the pooling of skills, experience and resources with healthcare institutions for the joint development and implementation of patient centered projects on the basis of a shared commitment to successful patient outcomes.

  4. If there is an idea, inevitably there is a gap or a short fall in day to day clinical practice. • The idea can be developed to improve on clinical practice. • There is direct access to the end user. • All parties benefit.

  6. Three products developed , all of which are now CE marked and being used by the NHS. • Winner of the new technology award at the 2011 NHS Patient Safety Awards. • Winner of the North of England Critical Care Service Improvement Award.

  7. Arterial Lines • Arterial lines are used for sampling blood, but should never be injected into. • The problems associated with arterial line were the subject of a rapid response alert from the National Patient Safety Agency.

Working with Barts to develop greater diagnostic testing for IA. • Creation of a triple test diagnostic procedure. • Involvement in a step towards greater centralisation and mandatory testing for IA. • Increased focus on management issues as a way of best practice (i.e. stop unnecessary drug use).
