  2. Founder • Founded by a group of hermits in Mt. Carmel in Palestine between 1206 and 1214 • The group was originally led by Brocard • They based themselves on the detached prophet Elijah

  3. Beginning of Order • They became Carmelites in Palestine • The Carmelite Rule developed when they asked Albert, Patriarch of Jerusalem, for rules to live by • Built an oratory for the Blessed Virgin and placed themselves under her patronage and protection

  4. Mission of Order • Use prayer, silence, and solitude • Seek a life of peace with the Holy Trinity and the Eucharist • Support themselves by their own labor • Simple life • Live under the patronage of the Blessed Virgin Mary

  5. Lifestyle • Each member of the community spends time in solitude • Come together as a community for liturgy, meals, and recreation • Composed of priests and brother • Rarely engage with otherrs out of the monastery

  6. Order Today • Incoming members must be between 20 and 40 • Upon acceptance, new members receive a Carmelite habit and new name • New member begins two year Novitate. After this, they vow obedience, chastity, and poverty. • Confined and internal in their practices • Glorification of God is most important in the liturgy, source of spiritual life

  7. Interesting Facts, Saints, Leaders • All rites and ceremonies are sung, and on Sunday and feast days they are sung with Gregorian chants • Hermits make and sell religious paintings and icons • Saint John of the Cross comes from this order
