  4. Officer Schumann • “I had no desire to shoot my fellow citizens, and I knew they were about to put up a much stronger wall” • Jumped to the West side for freedom

  5. BERLIN WALL • It separated East and West Berlin • It separated family and friends • West Berlin-speak freely, dancing, shopping, etc • East Berlin-communism, no freedom

  6. Germany’s Past, After WWI • After the war, Germany had to pay billions of $’s as punishment for attacking other countries • The economy collapsed and prices soared! • PROBLEM???

  7. Adolf Hitler • A young German soldier who cried in 1918 when Germany lost the war • THE PROMISE….”My country will never suffer defeat again” • 1933-Appointed dictator and promised to make Germany great again

  8. HITLER • Blamed the economic problems on the German Jews and other ethnic minorities • Ruled through fear and terror • “the Germans should lead Europe” • Built a huge military • Attacked other countries and forced them under German rule

  9. HITLER • His actions led to the start of WW 2 in 1939 • Great Britain, Soviet Union, and the U.S. joined forces to stop Hitler • By the end of the war Europe was in ruins

  10. HOLOCAUST • Mass murder of 6 million Jews • Prison camps • Millions of people were murdered in these camps

After WW2(Germany divided) • The Americans, British, French, and the soviets divided Germany • West Germany was a democracy (Americans, British, and French) • East Germany was communist (Soviet Union) • The Berlin wall separated these 2 cities of East and West Berlin • Became known as the WALL OF SHAME

  12. COLD WAR • Democracy vs. Communism • Soviet Union wanted to spread communism through Europe • Family and friends were separated by the cold war border • EXAMPLE: after Conrad jumped over, he could no longer see his family

  13. Beliefs of East Germany • Obey without asking questions • Spy on family members and neighbors • Respect only things that helped communism • WEST WAS HARMFUL

  14. BYE BYE BERLIN WALL • Eventually, no one wanted to stay in East Germany and it collapsed • Nov.9, 1989 crowds of people began scrambling over the wall • Crowds tore at the wall and took it apart block by block

  16. Reunification • Process of Germany becoming unified again • Germany becomes a single country again

  17. Change of life in East Germany • Enjoy modern TV’s, cars, new shopping malls, and better roads • In 1990, The “NEW GERMANY” is created • Berlin became the capital because of its central location • Great Job 6th Grade, we will be flying back to the U.S. tomorrow!!!!!!!!!
