  2. Early Life Born April 28, 1926, in Monroeville, Alabama. Her mother suffered from mental illness. Lee’s childhood friend was Truman Persons (mostly known as Truman Capote) Parents Amasa Coleman Lee and Frances Cunningham Finch Lee.

  3. Education Attended Huntington College (1944-1945) Studied law at the University of Alabama (1945-1949) Transferred to Oxford University for summer studies. Received no degrees from university.

  4. Major Life Events (early 1930s) Lee befriends Truman Persons. (1945) Lee attends the University of Alabama to study law. (1949) Lee quits law school to become a writer in New York. (July 11, 1960) To Kill a Mockingbird is published. (August 25, 1984) Truman Capote died.

  5. Literary Works To Kill a Mockingbird, published in 1960. She worked with Truman Capote on In Cold Blood, but never received credit for “co-authoring.” She wrote some magazine essays. Never finished a supposed, “next novel.”

  6. Influences Her father influenced the character of Atticus Finch. Truman Capote influenced the character of Dill Her life in the south and her experiences with segregation influenced To Kill a Mockingbird.

  7. Achievements To Kill a Mockingbird was voted the best novel of the 20th century by the Library Journal. To Kill a Mockingbird won the Pulitzer Prize in 1961. Lyndon B. Johnson assigned her to the National Council on the Arts. George W. Bush awarded Lee the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Barack Obama awarded her the National Medal For Arts. To Kill a Mockingbird was made into a movie in 1962. she has also been given various other awards from multiple other social and literary groups.
