What are Hops? • Hops are one of the basic ingredients in beer brewing - the others being grain, yeast, and water • Flower of the hop plant • Contain an essential oil with a very bitter flavor • Contain two essential acids • Alpha: responsible for the bitter flavor in the beer • Beta: contribute to beer's bitter aroma

  3. Hop Kinds • Bittering and Aroma • Bittering hops have higher concentrations of alpha acids, are responsible for the large majority of the bitter flavor of a beer, and are generally boiled longer • Aroma hops are typically added to the wort later to prevent the evaporation of the essential oils, to impart "hop taste" , or "hop aroma"

  4. Why We Hop Side Notes • To counter the sweetness of the malt extract or “first wort” • To preserve the Beer • Flavor, Smell, and Feel • The bitterness given to the beer because of the Hops is measured in, International Bitterness Units or (IBU’s) • The US is the #2 Producer next to Germany • Hops has been used as treatment for anxiety, restlessness, and insomnia • It grows up like a vine • Dangerous to Dogs • The Type is named for origin

  6. Well what does IBU mean to You • If I don’t like Hoppy Beer what IBU is too High? • Depends on the beer • Best to look at IBU/SG • If you like hoppy & someone else doesn’t you can hop after

  7. Engineer’s Corner(Hop Spider) • Parts and Supplies List• 4-inch to 3-inch reducing PVC coupling• 1 nylon paint straining bag (1- or 5-gallon/3.8- or 19-L size, depending on your batch size)• 3 carriage bolts with 6 nuts and washers of corresponding size• 1 turn-key clamp (that will fit the 3-inch end of the coupling)• Power drill with drill bit that corresponds to the size of the carriage bolts• eye protection (safety goggles) • http://byo.com/component/resource/article/2494-build-a-hop-spider-projects
