  1. Explain the impact British colonization has had on the Indigenous peoples of Australia. By Nicolas Becerra

  2. Introduction • Ever thought of being taken away from your family, and forcibly turned into a slave? In 1788 the aboriginals were kidnapped and were forced to work as slaves. The Europeans forced other tribes to help kidnap more because they were threatened to kill their family. The aboriginals were taken from their native land and were used as slaves in Europe until they bacame free again

  3. Protection Policy • When the British took control they though the aboriginals were uneducated. So they had no way of protecting themselves and the British. The British thought their race wasn’t evolved enough so they decided to help them. The British started teaching the children how to speak English and educated them but not with the benefits of a normal European. They thought that by doing that the aboriginals would adapt the religion of Christianity and start acting like white people. They were put in reserves and the reserves kept growing but they also needed to harvest food. But when the white people needed the farmlands they removed the aboriginals. The churches mission was to turn all the aboriginals into Christians. When the aboriginals were moved from their native land they would not know how to hunt and starve. There were 114 reserves in South Wales. To turn aboriginals into Christian people they were taken from their parents while they were young. The Churches thought they were doing the right thing but they were actually hurting the aboriginals. The Europeans still had control over the lives of the aboriginals and they decided what to do with them they had control over who the aboriginal can marry where he was buried and where they would live.

  4. Assimilation Policy • The British tried to make the aboriginal population turn Christian and also tried to make them more European because there are too many aboriginals to kill. The British were trying to make them similar to them by making them adapt their way of living, clothing, talking, and beliefs. They were forced to live on the outskirts of town because most Europeans wouldn’t like living next to indigenous people, the houses they lived in had no water, sewage or sanitation. Indigenous people would not be hired very often. Europeans tried to abolish all the aboriginal beliefs and ways. The British tried to breed out the black skin color. The government still controlled the marriages and they were excluded from some public places like pools. In This policy they had to wear tags that will show they are part of the community.

  5. Integration Policy • In 1960 the British found out it was hard to make an entire population change their ways of living and religion so they let the aboriginal people still be part of the Australian community while still keeping their culture. They just go to live inside the city and keep their own culture. So the government has accepted to let them in the society. But were still rejected and treated as a minority. Also they were still forced to go to church, speak English and look European. When they had children they would be separated from their family and the children were sent away to be taught how to become a servant, but if the children were white enough they would be given education.

  6. Self Determination Policy • In 1972 Self-determination was when the government fully accepted the aboriginal society with no restrictions or limitations. They let the indigenous people choose how to live and let them have the right over their life. There were no more forced marriages or no more rejection and they were not treated as a minority. They had the same life a normal European would have.

  7. Reconciliation Policy • Reconciliation was when the aboriginals and the Europeans tried to put everything behind them and focus on the future. Now the people are accepting more aboriginals into schools and jobs but there are still some people who don’t respect them

  8. Why did the British Colonize • The aboriginal people lived in Australia for about 40,000 to 60,000 years before the British colonized it. During those times Europe competed in the ownership of foreign lands. The main reason was for the colonization was to establish penal colony for its criminals. The prisons in England were increasingly overcrowded so the government decided to migrate them into Australia. They thought it was a good decision because it was better that they don’t disturb on the law abiding population. They could also see that it was a cheap establishment for a new settlement. They would be sent to Australia to live freely and do what they choose to do. This was so they do not interrupt the development of England. • http://www.helium.com/items/1443076-australia-penal-colony-british-colonization-of-australia

  9. British/Aboriginal • The British thought that they were helping the aboriginals by turning theminto aEuropean citizenbut they didn’t want to accept the fact that they were actually hurting the aboriginals by taking they'rechildren, and change their whole life • The aboriginals were decreasing in number. If they tried to escape the camps they would be severely punished so they just had to stay and become slaves.

  10. Rabbit Proof fence • The “Movie rabbit proof fence” was a great example of the assimilation policy. In the 1930s, 3 girls we kidnapped by the police without permission of the mother or grandmother. They aresent to a camp where they wereforced to learn the ways of Europeans, like clothing, religion, and language. The British tried to make the aboriginal population becomeChristian and also tried to make them more European, because there are too many aboriginals to exterminate. The British were trying to make them similar to them by making them adapt their way of living, clothing, talking, and beliefs, also by breeding them out. • They were forced to live on the outskirts of town because most Europeans wouldn’t like living next to Indigenous people. Indigenous people would not be hired very often. European tried to abolish all the aboriginal beliefs and ways. The British tried to breed out the black. The government controlled the marriages and they were excluded from public places like pools. The government realized it wasn’t working so they moved on to integration in 1960. • http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0252444/plotsummary

  11. Conclusion • In conclusion in think the British colonization had a big impact the aboriginal society. The British first tried to eliminate the aboriginal society with diseases and manslaughter but there were too many so they tried to change their whole identity by forcing them into Christianity and making them learn the European ways of speaking English, the ways of clothing, and education. In my opinion that is basically killing someone because that person is not the same person anymore, the whole identity is lost just as would happen if someone were to die. So after that protection policy finished, the new policy of assimilation was to make the indigenous people similar to the European. I find that the British were trying to help after what they’ve done but it was not a huge step to improvement because to assimilate is to make something similar but not the same. In the assimilation policy they were just given rights to live within the city’s outskirts but still treated as a minority with no sanitation clean water or food. After the assimilation policy came the Integration policy, which let the government still have control over your life, the government chose who you got married with, they wouldn’t let you in public areas such as pools, parks, or restaurants, and you were still treated as a minority. The Self-determination policy was when they were finally over with all the racism and hate towards the indigenous population letting them live their life freely however they want to live it believing in any religion and dressing how you wanted, you were also allowed to live inside the city and you were not rejected from public places. This was my favorite policy because it went back all over again to the start where they could do whatever they want without anyone in control of their life. Reconciliation is pretty much just trying to forget the past and just focus in a better future for all Australians. • I think the British impact on the natives of Australia was worse than what would have happened if they were left alone because they had to go through all those policies of discrimination and racism to finally live free, if the British never colonized the aboriginals there would have been no change and way less suffering.
