  4. kids and getting around the system.Reader post by: dorky1317  Posted on: 4/26/06 5:46 PM PDTStory: Kids outsmart Web filters “I understand you want to protect us and I also understand you want us to pay attention, but it really isn't going to work. As far as protecting us we go straight home and do it anyway and yes a lot of us are clueless about giving out information but we go out and do it anyway, why? Because we're kids, we're disobedient, and that's just how we learn even though listening would probably be easier in the first place.”

  5. What students need to know... • The Internet is a powerful tool that should be used wisely. • Not all Internet information is valid or appropriate. • How to maximize the Internet’s potential while protecting themselves from potential abuse.

  6. What students need to know… • Internet messages and the people who send them are not always what or who they seem. • How to avoid dangerous situations and get adult help. • Which online activities are safe and legal. (i.e. – file sharing)

  7. What teachers need to know… • Classroom Internet use can be exciting, rewarding, and challenging. • Students’ Internet use should be tailored to their ages. • Students need to hear rules often. • Monitoring is crucial.

  8. What teachers need to know… • Student technological interactions in the virtual world can be negative and spill over into the real world. • Exchanging information with others is a great way to use the Internet but also possesses inherent dangers.

  9. What administrators need to know… • The division must have clear and effective policies and procedures in place to protect students and help prevent system misuse. • Although a school’s legal responsibility does not extend to home Internet use, school leaders can help prevent tragic situations by ensuring parents and students are well informed.

  10. 5 things to never share online • Name • Address • Phone Number • Name of Your School • Picture of Yourself

  11. Teach children to: • Think before they click: • With whom are they chatting or e-mailing? • What are they saying and how are they saying it? • Will the person on the other end know they are joking? • Walk away from the computer and “Take 5” before responding to something that upsets them online.

  12. Teach children to: • Avoid spreading rumors, assisting in cyberbullying or sharing private communications online. • Follow the golden rule of cyberspace: Don’t do anything online that you wouldn’t do in real life!
