  1. HUNTINGTON MANOR JUNIORS PROGRAM

  2. EXPLANATION USER LIMITATIONS Physical shape of user (Exercize and Hydration are key to good performance) Psychological-Comfort level of wearing an SCBA The tasks being performed and the Stress levels while performing these tasks All of these will effect the limitations of the SCBA and the wearer

  3. Why in the Fire service do we need SCBA 1. FIRES - Products of combustion and super heated air 2. O2 deficient environments(Below grade or confined spaces<17%O2 3. Haz-Mat -(Co, H2s) We wear a Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) To protect our raspatory system helping preventing us from inhaling Hazardous Materials and provide us with O2 in environments that are oxygen deficient.

  4. SCBAs do have limitations YES THE LIMITATIONS OF THE EQUIPMENT AND THE LIMITATIONS OF THE WEARER EITHER PHYSICAL OR MENTAL OR BOTH

  5. EXPLANATION EQUIPMENT LIMITATIONS Air supply- Bottles come in different sizes 30,45 and 60 minute bottles(always check how full bottle is before you start using) The type of SCBA WILL ALSO EFFECT PERFORMANCE FOR EXAMPLE 30 MIN BOTTLES WEIGH AROUND 23 LBS WEAR AS 60 MIN BOTTLES WEIGH 30 LBS AT HMFD we use 30 min bottles TEMPERATURES Weakest part of the SCBA is the face piece depending on brand usually rated around 535 F

  6. Please demonstrate with mask MEDIUM TEXT 1 Face piece with regulator adapter port 2 Nose cone on interior of mask 3 Voice emitter either side of mask 4 Head straps either 4 point or 5 point for securing to your head NOTE Always check mask or flush out with air before donning to prevent any dust or materials from getting in eyes or mouth

  7. REGULATOR PLEASE DEMONSTRATE Most of our regulators have a Heads up Display on top of regulator to left of regulator is a Red knob that is called a purge valve which is connected to the low pressure air hose (These systems are Low Pressure 100PSIto>normal atmospheric pressure) which helps contaminates from entering the face piece to the right side of regulator is the face piece locking tab . when connecting to face piece adaptor port put Red knob up at 12 o clock position than turn it to the left to click in to place take a breath and this will activate your breathing system NOTE if you turn on and air is coming out before you don it than 1 of 2 thing to stop it turn red purge valve to close position if that doesn't work on top of regulator is a donning switch just press straight down

  8. Once regulater and face piece are together they create the mask once on this will have a built in Viber alert Meaning that once you have consumed at least of 4/4 s of your SCBAs bottled air it will vibrate signaling you that you only have 1/4 of air left to make your exit out of the building. Being that these bottles we use here are labled 30 minute bottles doesn't mean that you will get 30 minutes of air out of them this all depends on how comfortable you are breathing how strenuous the activity is that your doing and if you are breathing out of you nose or mouth different breathing techniques will give you the maximum time out of bottles.

  9. The pack consists of many different working parts (Jon Please Demonstrate) we went over the face piece now we will go over there rest you have your straps both shoulder and waist always tighten waist first let weight sit on hips than snug up shoulders so that you don't restrict you arms and over exert your self. The bottle slips into cradle of harness than you connect hose to bottle hand tight only than using cylinder latch to hold into place. Remember harness holds everything into place and the straps attatch to you. On the top each bottle there will be a reading from 0-40 that indicates how much air is in bottle 40 representing 4000 PSI which is what you want to always start with there will also be a remote pressure gauge on your right side front strap of SCBA harness also attached to that is your Pass alarm activation button and warning light and manuall pass alarm reset button (please demonstrate)

  10. PASS ALERT National Fire Protection Association: NFPA 1982 - Standard on personal alert safety systems (PASS). The standard specifies that the PASS device will go into pre-alarm mode after 20 seconds of inactivity and full alarm mode at 30 seconds of inactivity. Also designed for if you are lost or have an emergency you may set off manually to let others no were you are. (Jon please demonstrate)

  11. PPE & SCBA DONNING GUIDE Step by Step Process Candidate shall prepare all components of their PPE & SCBA for donning: PPE- Coats, pants, boots, gloves, hood, helmet and mask arranged SCBA- Straps fully extended, main line/high pressure line attached, by- pass closed, and donning switch depressed (Scott) Timing will begin when you removes your street shoes or touches PPE Than will: Remove street shoes, pulls hood over head leaving on head Place feet in boots, pull up pants & place suspenders over shoulders Zip all zippers, affix all Velcro and button all buttons Put on coat, zip all zippers, button all buttons and affix all Velcro Roll hood down over neck closure of turnout coat Than positions themselves in front of SCBA: Visually verify cylinder pressure and verbalize the pressure to evaluator

  12. Turn cylinder on fully, verbalize that; vibra-low air alarm functions, redundant low air alarm functions and that the PASS alarm is functioning Verbalize remote cylinder air gauge pressure Operate emergency by-pass and verbalize that it is functioning Than dons SCBA Using the Back pack or the coat method please do this in a controlled manner as not to impact regulator Than tightens waist belt before shoulder straps. SCBA should ride on candidate’s hips with shoulder straps snug to allow for full range of movement of arms above candidate’s head than dons face piece Tighten all straps, checks mask to face seal and verbalizes to evaluator Than pulls hood over facepiece to ensure hood covers “rubber” of facepiece Than dons helmet and tightens chin strap Than dons gloves Than attaches MMR to face piece and breaths air
