    8. Teachers Comments about Lesson Study What is the common thread throughout these comments?

    9. [Lesson Study] allowed us to be “real” with each other. Listening to my teammates was energizing and inspiring. …unifies team toward a specific goal. ….had to listen, bring commonality, trust between new members. Having our teammates give us feedback was affirming. Great way to collaborate and build our team. We hadn’t all worked together before and we found all kinds of ideas and strengths. 10. I realized that I tend to latch onto the kinesthetic, student-led activities, and sometimes leave too much to chance. Strong planning and later observing each other gave us additional ideas and strategies to use. Watching each other teach gives a wealth of information – learning new styles, techniques, etc. I learned different ways to deal with classroom management while observing each of the lessons. I learned so much from my teammates in terms of planning, instructing and assessing.

    11. The time to sit with my team and critically look at the new science unit was fantastic! Having a rich discussion about how to interpret the [science] goals and lessons was really helpful. None of use know much about the [science concept] so there was a lot of exchange of ideas around vocabulary, processes and products. After teaching the same unit for 6 years, sitting down and…determining which elements of the unit were weak was motivating. We learned more about ecosystems, but also about teaching methodologies. …helped me think about what 4th graders really needed to understand about the ecosystems. I am so much more confident in the teaching of science.

    12. The greatest benefit was having the ability to analyze our lesson- to refine, consolidate ideas and add what was necessary to make the lesson meaningful to ALL students. It was neat to see how a lesson could be manipulated over and over to best suit students’ learning. My new “aha” is the idea of writing children’s thoughts in a writing notebook instead of charting immediately. The eye contact and personal connection with each child was beneficial. We came up with ideas for … differentiating the lesson.

    13. Never feel judged. It was a very safe environment to hone one’s skills. We feel more safe with each other - to ask questions, ask for help, etc. All expertise levels are valued.

    16. Evaluate What have you learned that we can add to your previous understanding?
