  2. POSTER • The poster varies from a simple printed card to a complicated and artistic design. It is substitute for firsthand experience. Principles for using are same as that of bulletin board. Materials are easily obtainable and inexpensive. The most commonly used materials are drawing paper, poster board and colored writing materials. The poster has a duel value when it is made by the student. It is suitable for patient education presenting safety measures and many others aspects measures and many others aspects relating to facts.

  3. FUNCTION OF POSTER • Make an instant appeal • Convey single idea or a few ideas • Be comprehensible at a distance and sufficiently clear to be understood at a glance

  4. USING POSTERS IN TEACHING • Poster delivers its message without providing details. The poster can be used to create a learning atmosphere and to provide motivation. It should be simple. Poster making should not be only an exercise; it should lead into significant relationships so that powerful actions can be fostered. Poster should utilize an emotional appeal to convey message aimed at reinforcing an attitude. Ineffective posters use too many symbols, too many words, give representations that have more than one meaning or make allusions that are not understood.

FLASH CARDS • Selection of topic and the content to be displayed should be carefully planned before the preparation of the flash cards • Illustrations in the flash cards should be simple and prepared according to the level of understanding of the audience • The number of cards should not exceed 10-12 • The size of the group should mot be more than 40

Arrange the cards in the proper sequence • A brief introduction of the topic should be given to the group before displaying flash cards • Display the cards in congruent with the content • Hold the cards and turn towards different parts of the group and ensure it is viewed by all members in the group • Significant points should be pointed out and care should be taken not to cover with hands • Look at the cards while the concept is explained from the cards • Involve the audience in discussion.

FLANNEL GRAPH • The flannel graph works on the principle that a piece of flannel or felt has a hairy surface when placed against a similar surface will remain in position because fibers interlock. Flannel graph is a thick piece of cardboard or plywood or wooden board of 3’x 4’ size on which a rough piece of flannel is stretched or fastened tightly with drawing pins. The drawings, pictures, photographs and the like can be adhered to the board by pasting a piece of flannel on their back. The exhibits to be displayed on the board are arranged in pre-determined order and fastened on the board at the appropriate moment.

GUIDELINES TO USE FLANNEL GRAPH • Preparation: a detailed written guidelines should be developed, arrange the cards in proper sequence • Presentation: in the beginning, purpose and important of the task should be emphasized. Place the title of the topic at the top of the board. The first few cards should arouse the interest among the group. Presentation should be continued step by step • Application: lesson guide should be prepared in such a way it gives opportunity for the group to contribute discussion • Testing: it helps to evaluate the effectiveness of the presentation.

ADVANTAGES OF THE FLANNEL GRAPH • It makes the presentation interesting and keeps holding the attention of the students. • This technique permits high degree of group participation • It is mostly used for building up story. The clever use can place interesting pieces on the flannel and keep the students/audience wondering how the story will end.
