  2. Titanic was Unsinkable • 882 feet long (about 4 city blocks) 11 stories • Double layered steel hull • 16 compartments with watertight doors • 4 could flood and the ship wouldn’t sink • Apr. 10, 1912 began 6 day maiden voyage England to NY • April 14, at 2:10 the Titanic sank in the Atlantic

What Went Wrong?Communication • 11:00 p.m. warning of ice from the California • Message was not delivered to bridge • The California was only 10 miles away • California had turned off their radio • The Carpathian was 58 miles south (4:10) • The listening ship was not close and the close ship was not listening

  5. Our Fellowship is Sinking • Koinonia - communicate, sharing • With God first 1 Jn. 1:6-7 • He communicates through the Bible • We respond through prayer • Share pure life with brethren • Acts 2:42-47 • Time spent with worldly friends (school) • Time spent on worldly pursuits (money)

  6. What Went Wrong?Speed • 11:40 p.m. ice berg spotted • Ship was traveling too fast to avoid contact • Scraped beneath the surface • Six compartments filled with water • The unsinkable ship would sink in 2 hours

  7. The six compartments flooded and the bow began to sink • The strain was so great that it broke apart.

Our Membership is Sinking • In too big of a hurry to increase numbers • Reduce Entrance Requirements • withdrawn from by other church • 3rd marriage after 2 divorces • Liberalism throughout background • Reject Exit Requirements 1 Cor. 5:6 • Danger beneath surface Rev. 2:5 • Casual toward placing membership

  10. What Went Wrong?Preparation • 20 Lifeboats • 16 others left behind • 28 passengers in lifeboat which holds 65 • Others felt safer on the huge ship, denying what was happening

  12. Our Eldership is Sinking • Elders appointed from membership • “Qualifications Impossible!” • I Tim. 3:1-8, Titus 1:6-9 • Not preparing our youth for future • Not prepared to remove unqualified men • Acts 20:28-31 • I Tim. 5:19-22 • Majority, preacher, steering committee

  13. What Went Wrong?Conditions • Water was a frigid 28 degrees • 328 frozen bodies were recovered • 2208 on board • 705 were rescued

Our Worship is Sinking • Emotionalism: celebrate, entertain, tears at the drama, laughter at the humor • Overreaction: Cold, no amen, tears, smiles • Removed anger toward sin, love for brethren, joy for salvation • Vain repetitions Matt. 6:7 • Hymns are lifeless Col. 3:16 • No comments before Supper • Preachers make good martyrs

What’s Wrong With The Church? • Fellowship is sinking (we communicate more with the world than with God) • Membership is sinking (we rush to grow in numbers and fail to grow in spirit) • Eldership is sinking (we do not prepare our men to grow in the qualifications) • Worship is sinking (we have become cold and lifeless in our approach to God)
