All the information you need to join and understand the KKK idealisms are in here. • This is a white supremacy organization founded in 1865 Pulaski, Tennessee who advocate extremist ideals. • Our members:1st Klan 550,000. 2nd Klan 3,000,000–6,000,000(peaked in 1920–1925 period). 3rd Klan 5,000–6,000 • This Presentation talks about the SECOND KKK.
Background: WHO IS THE KKK? • KKK stands for Ku Klux Klan. • The KKK is a white supremacy organization founded in 1915 • Beliefs: • 100% American Caucasian majority. • Americans should be the guardians of society’s behavior/morals • Pledge of secrecy to keep the symbols of the KKK secret and to not reveal it to the outside world.
HISTORY: • Similarities and Enemies • Similar to the German and Italian movements of the 1920’s because of the idealism of racial superiority, pride for race, and extreme nationalism • Differentfrom the KKK formed after the Civil war because • 1920 Increase in enemy circle to include Jews, Japanese and European immigrants, French Canadians.
2. ORIGINAL LOCATION: • Atlanta, Georgia is the founding ground for the SECOND KKK. • Founded this time by William J. Simmons • In the 1920’s within the states of Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, the KKK included 80% or the largest membership in the U.S.
3. INFLUENCE ON CULTURE • The KKK influenced culture through their idea of “Pure Americanism” • This became a mainstream idea in the 1920’s and still reverberates through some of our more conservative cultures.
4. WHY THE KKK DIMINISHED IN THE MID TO LATE 1920’S? • Numbers diminished in the mid late 1920’sdue to a problem with a leader of the KKK from Illinois known as David Stephenson. • Crime: murder of a woman. • Due to this event the KKK’s beliefs to change (So during KKK camp lets try not to follow this example). 5. Rituals • Tarring and Feathering (before bedtime) • Flogging until morale improves (consequences and seminars) • Lynching of enemies (camp activities) • Burning crosses (during sing along) • Uniforms include hooded ghost outfits (avoid ghost busters during wearing of uniform)
6. SOCIAL, MORAL, POLITICAL OR ECONOMIC CHANGE? • The members saw the Klan as a political movement. • They change the growing cultural and political dominance of what they saw as immoral, or multiracial • This was the cultural and political change that white Americans have had to face throughout the twentieth century.
