Current Trends and Facts on U.S. Border Security and Illegal Immigration

The United States is home to approximately 11.1 million illegal immigrants today, with illegal border crossings down 80% since 2000. The number of Border Control Agents has doubled under the Obama administration, increasing from 10,000 in 2004 to around 21,000 in 2011. Technological advancements, such as DHS unmanned aerial aircraft, enhance monitoring efforts. Data shows a dramatic decline in apprehensions, with a 53% reduction from 2008 to 2011. Not surprisingly, crime rates in border cities like San Diego and El Paso remain significantly low.
