  5. Communication • Progress Reporting: • Power School Parent Portal • Allows parents the ability to monitor student progress online. • Parent/Teacher Conferences • Report Cards are issued at the end of each quarter

  6. Discipline Policy • Student is addressed about specific behavior. • Behaviors • Disruptive • Disrespectful • Unsafe • Unkind • Irresponsible • Unethical • Defiant • The consequences range from a verbal warning , to • an office referral. • Most infractions are handled at the classroom level.

  7. Incentive Plan • “Behavior Bucks” • All students begin the year with $50 in the “Behavior Credit Union Account. • For each disciplinary incident, money is deducted from their account. • Student may also earn money for deposit by being recognized by a teacher for doing “good” deeds. • Students maintaining a $45 or more in their account at the end of the quarter will be eligible to participate in that quarter’s incentive activity.

Homework Procedures Students will be assigned homework daily: ~ Sixth Grade: 60-75 minutes cumulatively ~ Homework counts for no more than 20% of the final grade ~ Grades are determined by the quality of the work and effort demonstrated ~ Homework will be graded as follows: + = 100 % - Meets all expectations = 85% - Satisfactory -- = 68 % - Unsatisfactory 0 = 0 % - Undone, not attempted

  11. Daily Schedule • Rotates on a daily basis • Specialty Subject for Teachers • 3- 70 minute periods • 1 – 60 minute period

  12. Language Arts ~ Spelling, Grammar and Vocabulary through reading and writing. ~ Research projects using the IIM process and technology such as Photostory 3 and Power Point. ~ Exploring novels using literature circles, individual projects, and class discussions.

  13. Math ~ A standards based program focusing on student directed approach. ~ Math Scapes, breaks the curriculum into units. The units continue to spiral throughout the year. ~ The program addresses all learning styles

  14. Social Studies • Geography Themes: ~ Location, Place, Human Environment & Interactions, Movement & Regions • World Geography: ~ Countries, Landforms, Major Rivers • Ancient Civilizations: China Greece Rome Egypt Middle Ages

Science • Units : • Earth SciencePhysical Science • Landforms & Soil - Electrical Energy • - Plate Tectonic, Earth’s Layers - Matter • Life Science • Classification of Living Things • Cells, Tissues ,Organs, Organ Systems and Organisms • - Physical, Emotional, Social & Mental/Emotional health • - Health & Fitness, Nutrition, Senses & Hygiene • Activity centered curriculum, hands-on. • Partner and group work required. • 2 Column note – taking skills; 3 ring binder required.

  16. FRENCH ~ Introductory French ~ Language Topics Include: Alphabet, Numbers, Colors, Time, Days & Months ~ Cultural Exploration Unit

Technology • Computer technology is integrated into the four core subject areas: • (Language Arts, Science, Math & Social Studies). • Each content area teacher has developed units which incorporates • the use of technology into that area of study. • Once a week, the sixth grade team will have day long use of the • Computers in the Computer Lab.

  19. Art • 6th grade Art classes supplements/correlate to units taught in Social Studies. • Depending on what country the students are studying, decides what they do in art. For Example: • Japan – origami & block printing • India – mehndi & batik • Africa – masks & rain sticks

  24. Guidance • Students will have a 30 minute guidance period • oncea week, throughout the year. • Activities and topics covered: Adventurelore: Team building(Sept. 1st) Conflict Resolution Beginning career exploration The Make it Real Game Friendship Unit Study Skills Success

  25. Snack Cart • Breakfast Items, snack items & waters • Used to fund grade level activities: • - Monthly incentive • - Field Trips • Open during homeroom times.
