6th Grade Basic First Aid
Dealing with Emergencies • First Aid • Emergency medical care for someone who has been hurt or who is sick.
When to Give First Aid • Someone who is unconscious • Not breathing • In pain
When to Give First Aid • If you give first aid incorrectly you may hurt the victim more. • Don’t give first aid if you are in danger. • Call for help right away.
Checking a Victim • Is the victim unconscious? • Are there any obvious injuries? • Is the victim breathing? • Does the victim have a pulse? • Are there any bottles or boxes which indicated poisoning? • Does the victim have any preexisting health problems?
Making Emergency Phone Calls • Call 9-1-1 • Stay calm • Give the following information: • Your name • Your location • The type of emergency • The condition of the victim if someone is hurt • What you have done to care for a victim.
Burns • First Degree • Red, mild, and not very deep. Example: mild sunburn. • Second Degree • Cause blisters and are very painful. • Third Degree • Dark in color. These burns destroy pain receptors, so they are not as painful as second degree burns.
