Starting with the first Paralympics Gamesin Rome in 1960, the InternationalParalympics Committee has organized summer and winter games that follow the regular Olympic Games and are hosted by the same city. Athletes with all types of disabilities compete in the Paralympics. More than 160 nations participate in this nonprofit organization, with over 6,000 participants worldwide. • How do you think athletes withdisabilities benefit from competing in the Paralympics or in similar local events?

  3. ¿Qué haces en tutiempolibre? In many Spanish-speaking countries, extracurricularactivities traditionally play a much smaller role in school life than in the United States. Students usually participate in activities such as music and athletics at clubs and institutions outside of school. Although some schools have teams, many studentswho are interested in sports attend clubs such as el Club Deportivo General San Martín. At these clubs teens practice and compete on teams. They also participate in individual sports such as tennis. The competition between clubs is sometimes moreintense than the competition between schools.

  4. Students with artistic talents often go to a privateinstitute to take music, dance, or art lessons. Theymightattend el Instituto de Música Clásica orel Instituto de Danza Julio Bocca. • Many students spend their time outside of classesstudying a foreign language. They might learn Englishat la CulturaInglesa or French at la AlianzaFrancesa. • In general, students do not hold jobs. They spendtheir time studying, being with family and friends,and participating in different activities.
