The United Nations - History • na international organizations whose mission and work are guided by the purposes and principles contained in its founding Charter • January 1942 - the name "United Nations“ is coined by United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt (first used in the Declaration by United Nations of 1 January 1942, during the Second World Warwhen representatives of 26 nations pledged their Governments to continue fighting together against the Axis Powers. • June 1945 - The Charter was signed by 50 countries • 24 October 1945 -The UN officially comes into existence (when the Charter wasratified by China, France, the Soviet Union, the UK, the USA and by a majority of other signatories) • currently made up of 193 Member States
The Purposes of the UN • Upholding international laws and human rights • To maintain international peace and security • To ensure economic development • To ensure social advancement
The main organs of the UN • Read section III of the text and find the main organs: • Join in groups of 6. Each student reads about one of the organs, takes notes and later reports to the group.
UN projects and agencies • Read the last section of the text and extract the specialized agencies mentioned in the text as well as the special areas of their activity. • Answer the questions in ex. VI.
