  1. Chapter 5 Notes Writing Linear Equations

  2. 5.1 Writing Linear Equations in Slope – Intercept Form Objective - Use the slope – intercept form to write an equation of a line

  3. Terms • Slope – intercept form

  4. When given a graph • Find the y – intercept and plug it in for b • Find the slope form that point and plug it in for m

  5. Practice • Line A m= b= • Line B • m= • b= A B

  6. Writing the equation of a line • Starting with y=mx+b • Replace m with the value given for slope. • Replace b with the value given for the y – intercept.

  7. Practice • Slope = 1 y – intercept = 0 • Slope = ½ y – intercept = -9 • Slope = -2/3 y – intercept = -258

  8. Practice • Slope = -6 y – intercept = 3/4 • Slope = 0 y – intercept = 4 • Slope = -2 y – intercept = 0

  9. Practice • One person form each row get white board materials for your entire row

  10. 5.2 Writing Linear Equations Given the slope and a Point Objective - Use slope and any point on a line to write an equation of the line

  11. Formulas • Slope intercept formula y=mx+b • Slope formula

  12. Writing the equation of a line • Starting with the slope formula • Plug in the given point for y1 and x1 • Plug in the given slope • Solve and get the answer in y=form

  13. Practice • (1,4) m=3 • (3,-3) m = 2

  14. Practice • (4,1) m=1 • (1,5) m = 0

  15. Practice • (1,1) m = 4 • (4,4) m = 3/2

  16. Practice • One person from each row get white board materials for your entire row

  17. 5.3 Writing Linear Equations Given Two Points Objective - Use slope and any point on a line to write an equation of the line

  18. Formulas • Slope intercept formula y=mx+b • Slope formula

  19. Writing the equation of a line • Starting with the slope formula • Find the slope between the two points • Using the slope formula for the second time • Plug in one of the given points for y1 and x1 • Plug in the slope that you found • Solve and get the answer in y=form

  20. (-1,-2),(2,6) (1,4),(5,-1) Practice

  21. (-1,-2),(3,-2) (2,0),(-2,6) Practice

  22. (0,-5),(3,5) (1,1),(1,4) Practice

  23. (-6,-5),(1,4) (2,3),(4,3) Practice
