  3. Total Fertility Rate (TFR) • Average number of children a women will have throughout her childbearing years (15-49)

  4. Where do you think the highest and lowest total fertility rate is?

  5. Where are the lowest and highest rates? Explain two reasons why you think this true

  6. Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) • The annual number of deaths of infants under 1 yr of age for every 1,000 live births

  7. Where do you think the highest and lowest IMR rates are?

  8. Which continents have the highest/lowest IMR? Why?

  9. Life Expectancy • Measures the average number of years a newborn infant can expect to live

  10. Where do you think the life expectancy rates are highest/lowest?

  11. Where is life expectancy the highest and lowest? Why?

  12. REFLECTION • Choose an area of the world. Write a summary of its population structure including the following terms: • CBR, CDR, NIR, IMR, TFR, Life Expectancy • Make sure you explain how and why these are related.

  15. What does the pyramid mean? • If the pyramid looks like a pyramid, the population is increasing. • If the pyramid looks like a V, the population is decreasing. • If the pyramid looks like a box, the population is stable (not growing or shrinking).

  17. Using your 5 observations from the previous population pyramid, compare and contrast them with this population pyramid.

  18. Making connections! • What is the difference between the two population pyramids? • What has happened in the world, that could explain the difference between the two pyramids?

  19. Look at these population pyramids for different U.S. cities… • What do you think is in each of these cities that would cause the population pyramid to look the way it does?

  20. EQ: What are Population pyramids 2/11 • Bell-ringer: Look back in your notes, what information is found on a population pyramid? Explain why two pyramids may look different from one another. • (write a 1 paragraph response to the questions above)

  21. Create your own population pyramids • Look at the two tables of information. Which columns of information do you need to make your pyramid? • How will you start it? • GO! Make your pyramid!!

  22. Compare and contrast • Look at the two population pyramids. Compare and contrast them with your group. Discuss reasons why they may look different. • Write a Level 1 or 2 question and then write a Level 4-6 question about each pyramid. • Swap questions with another group and answer the questions in your binder. • REPEAT
