  3. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

  4. Discuss how each of the elements have been used • How did they set the tone, or the feel? • Did it give you a good idea of what to expect from the rest of the film? • What features stood out the most?

  5. Film Techniques • Music - The pace of the music changes throughout the opening sequence. It begins quite quickly, implying that the characters are in a hurry. The large orchestral sounds give the scene a sense of gloom and doom. The music helps to set a serious tone. • Dialogue - The first time somebody speaks, they are giving a strong, powerful, demanding speech. This starts the movie off aggressively and sets the mood. From there, dialogue is rarely used, relying more on facial expressions, again helping to demonstrate the seriousness.

  6. Film Techniques • Lighting - The lighting used in this scene keeps it dark. In doing so, it creates a grim ambiance. • Camera Angles - A close up shot of the eyes at the beginning allows the audience to focus on the severity shown by his expression. The rest of the scene uses wide shots to allow the audience to see what is happening in the scene.

  9. Putting that information into a paragraph, may look like this . . . • The music in this scene is about wanting to rule the world, which is appropriate to a superhero themed movie. The way the characters speak to each other is how you would expect a family to talk. The lighting is used to make the audience see it is a bright, sunny day and everything is happy. When they show you looking up at the superheroes, it is because they want you to be amazed by them.

  10. . . . or this. • This scene was a light hearted, yet informative beginning to the movie. By initially describing the background of the superheroes, the audience is given an idea of what the movie will be about. Having the audience looking up at the two superheroes at the beginning provides a sense of awe and wonder. In moving from the comic style images to a real life scene accompanied by the appropriate song choice of ‘Everybody Wants to Rule the World’ shows that this movie will not be taking itself too seriously and allows the audience to relax. Conversation is general banter you would expect to hear at breakfast, although the change in voice tone when on the phone reinforces that this family is indeed living two lives. This scene demonstrates how the rest of the movie will be a bright and merry family movie.
