Osteopathic Education: • All osteopathic colleges emphasize primary care as an important part of their curriculum • Most students are members of ACOFP • membership is free to all Osteopathic students • Students are required to perform primary care focused rotations • including rotations in rural and underserved areas

  3. Three New Osteopathic Colleges! • A.T. Still University School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona • TOURO College of Osteopathic Medicine - New York • Lincoln Memorial University-DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine All three new colleges already have SOMA chapters established!

  4. Political Involvement • DO Day on the Hill, April 24th 2008 • Opportunity for students to lobby legislators • Pre-SOMA D.O. Day on the Hill Scholarship Award (New 2006) • $1000 for undergraduate member of National Pre-SOMA • Encourage undergraduate students to get involved in the politics of medicine before beginning medical school

  5. Omega Beta Iota • National Osteopathic Political Action Honor Society • Provides a level of distinction to OMSs and D.O.s who are exceptionally involved in the political arena • Participation in local/state campaigns • Completion of Political Action Training Course or membership in OPAC for two years • D.O. Day on the Hill participation for 2 years • Membership in everypatientcounts.org • Membership in Grassroots Osteopathic Advocacy Link (GOAL) program • Membership in AOA, SOMA and American Osteopathic Information Association (AOIA) • Inaugural Induction ceremony in D.C. in conjunction with D.O. Day on the Hill • 10 Osteopathic students were inducted in April of 2007

  6. International Health • International Health Program Scholarship • Encourage students to incorporate international elective experiences into their medical school curriculum • Develop an awareness of other cultures medical practice via direct student interaction

  7. International Programs • Pen collection • Assist the education systems in developing countries • Send writing utensils to countries like Morocco, Uganda and Tanzania • Medical Textbooks to Iraqi Schools

  8. Humanism in Medicine Memorial Scholarship • Created to honor the health care professionals who dedicate their lives to: • Osteopathic medicine • Compassion • Leadership • Love for their community • Awarded each fall to two Students • reflecting the benevolent character exemplified by the members of our Osteopathic family who perished Oct. 19, 2004

The Medically Underserved • Ed and Melissa Loniewski Medically Underserved Scholarship • $1000 toward elective rotation in a medically underserved location • Continue to support initiatives/projects sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation • Cover the Uninsured Week • The Kids and Families Back to School Campaign

  10. Preventive Medicine • PowerPoint's and Documents available on our web site www.studentDO.com • Topics include: • How to start a Preventative Medicine Program • AIDS Awareness • Minority Medicine • Injury Prevention • Smoking Prevention

  11. “Sports Drive for Kids” April 27th, 2007 • Visited Hardy Middle School in Washington, D.C. • SOMA chapters donated over 100 pieces of sporting goods!

National SOMA Fall Convention Service Project at the Senior Community Center in San DiegoOctober 1, 2007 • Community Center's mission is to provide quality and compassionate servicesfor the survival, health and independence of seniors living in poverty. • SOMA students gave a presentation on nutrition and physical fitness for the elderly. • 50 Dyna-Bands and 6 sets of free weights were handed out during the presentation. • A check for $940 that went towards the Feed A Seniorprogram was presented. 

  13. SOMA Unity Project 2007 • Homeless shelter outreach program in NYC • Dec 26th-30th, 2007 • Will be working with Help USA, which helps run many of NYC's shelters. • Tasks will include: asthma workshops for children, computer skills workshops for women, maintenance work, etc. • More information can be found at: http://www.studentdo.com/unity-project.htm

  14. Community Service Activities • Medical missions • Free clinic work in local communities targeting: • Underserved • Uninsured • Those having difficulty gaining access to healthcare • Used to introduce OMI & OMSII to clinical experiences • Often is initial exposure to patient care

  17. Individual Chapter Projects • Yellow Ribbon Suicide Prevention Campaign • Rural Health Fair • Minority Outreach • DOs Fit for Life “Fun Run/Walk”

  18. Chapter of the Year Award aka “Golden Femur Award” • Awarded to the chapter that has been most active throughout the year • Based on several criteria including community service, national involvement and local projects • 2007 winner Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine (CCOM)

  19. National Primary Care Week: Community-based Primary Care: Promoting Justice in Health October 8 - 12, 2007 • A collaboration of American Medical Student Association (AMSA) and Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA) chapters. • Reports and pictures in the spring meeting!
