  5. Animal Habitats • The Sea covers 70% earths surface • Free swimming animal known as Motile • Worms, jellyfish, fish, seal, whales • Attached and does not move known as Sessile • Mussels, oysters, anemones, sponges

  6. Sponges and Sea squirts • Simple animals • Filter feeders • Plankton and Oxygen • Rounded, cup or bowl shape • Many small pores • Large cavity in centre • Colonies encrust rocks and other surfaces

  8. Sea Anemones • Jelly like animal • Look like flowers • Carnivorous • Sting can be painful • Some can retract tentacles • Coral large colonies Great Barrier Reef • Jellyfish large anemone that can swim

  9. Jellyfish • Common/moon Purple • Compass Brown • Compass tentacles sting similar to nettle sting • Snorkeler protected by neoprene • Beautiful to watch • Traps food with tentacles

  10. Worms • Similar to garden worms • Live in mud and sand • Marine worms called Polychaetes • Two groups swimmer or non swimmers • Ragworm swimming predator • Lugworms live in sand identified by sand coils

  11. Molluscs • Large group - mussels, oysters, whelks, top-shells, sea slugs etc. • Soft body, head, single foot cover by hard shell • Most feed by licking algae off rocks • Dog Whelk predator nick-named “driller killer” • Bi-valves filter feeders

  12. Crustaceans • Crabs, lobsters, prawns • Exoskeleton • Crabs and lobsters have • 5 pairs of legs, decapods • Legs have different uses swimming, defence, walking • Not all crabs have own shell • Hermit crab

  13. Echinoderms • Starfish, sea-urchins, brittlestar, sea- cucumbers • Starfish common in intertidal zone • Commonly seen by snorkelers • Starfish feed by inserting their stomach in prey • Sea urchin graze on algae on rocks
