  1. Some information on “alternative magnet studies” for the “2-beams CLIC Modules” Michele Modena

  2. MBQ: NO ALTERNATIVE solution are expected (for the moment at least), but we can AMELIORATE the design toward big SERIES production and mainly to INVESTIGATE the feasible and really needed tolerances. 2nd Generation MBQ Magnets: • 1 MBQ Type1 under procurement with DMP-Spain; magnet should be available in Spring 2012(coils already procured). • 1 MBQ Type1 under procurement with OSTROJ- Czech Republic : first quadrant was recently measured at CERN and results are very encouraging (see next slide). • Subject is delicate: we would like to compare different technique (e.g. fine machining and fine grinding) with tolerances achievable. Definition of tolerance is also delicate for magnet pole profiles. The “final judge” for such pieces is the Integrated Field Quality. • 1 MBQ Type4 procurement will be also launched in 2012 (coils already procured). We wait results on the Type1 to define tolerances. EXTREMELY difficult to find serious Companies able to work at very low tolerances so long quadrant (~ 1800 mm) M. Modena, 15-2-2012, "2-Beam Module" WG

  4. DBQ: Alternative Magnets procurement (Full PM version): • 5 DBQ mock-up procured and available at CERN • 2 Mech. Tunable PM prototype magnets procured by Cockcroft. • 1 higher gradient range, not compatible with CLEX specification (too strong) • 1 lower gradient range, will be designed to be compatible with modules (LAB and CLEX) (procurement schedule plan: 1st May 2012 and 2nd February 2013) M. Modena, 15-2-2012, "2-Beam Module" WG

  5. DBQ: Alternative Magnets procurement (Hybrid version): • Following the requirement for the Decelerator (CDR Baseline), we are thinking to investigate a new hybrid DBQ design with the following characteristics: • MINIMIZE the EM powering by using PM for the part of gradient that will be always needed (see following graph) • Add COILS to reach the maximum gradient required (ex. during beam commissioning and beam studies) • Standardizethe design thinking toward a series of ~ 40 000 units; i.e. A “Modular” quadrupole design trying to simplify components geometry and playing with different PM grades in different part of the Decelerator to cover all the needed gradients. • This study is not yet started due to other priorities (i.e. the procurement of 2 new Final Focus Quadrupole for ATF2/ATF3 facility in Japan). Of course 1-2 prototypes to be envisaged but nothing available before mid-end 2013 M. Modena, 15-2-2012, "2-Beam Module" WG
