  1. ‘Plug & Play’ Unipart Rail along with key industry partners is at the forefront of the development process integrating plug and play into a number of key signalling projects helping to reduce the cost of testing, installing and commissioning of lineside equipment. The Unipart Rail service includes the delivery of a complete equipment package consisting of REB or Location Case, together with the plug-coupled trackside equipment and cut-to-length tails for integrating with existing equipment. All REB/Loc to REB/Loc cables and couplers are also supplied. The fitting of plug couplers to lineside equipment is the main thinking behind plug and play with most equipment becoming nothing more than a pre-tested off the shelf item. The plug and play concept reduces the amount of work required to be carried out at trackside by moving these activities to factories which can undertake these tasks in a more cost effective manner. • In addition to these cost savings the possession times required are also greatly reduced thus improving the service levels to the rail passengers. • Key features & benefits of plug and play include: • Factory testing is enabled for lineside equipment & pre-cut cable lengths • No duplicate cable testing is required • Trackside equipment and tail cables are installed with plug couplers • Improved efficiency for commissioning • All testing documentation is provided • No requirement of a test train to commission signalling Product Bulletin No 389

  2. Cut to Length Cable Tails • We have also developed a new cable drum which will enable the delivery of plug coupled cable tails ready for installation: • Pre-cut cable lengths to specific requirements • Tail cables complete with plug couplers • Automated measuring equipment used to ensure length accuracy and reduce surpluses • Cable reeled onto relevant sized drum, allowing access to both cable ends • Labelled to state from/to (eg REB-AWS Signal) Contact for technical advice Phil Hickey, Technical Sales Manager Telephone: +44 (0) 7950 004424 E-mail: phil.hickey@unipartrail.com • Unipart Rail August 2010
