  6. Ways to Improve # 2 • Plan out your paragraph • Use one of the following acronyms • APE (assertion, proof, explanation) • ACE (assertion, citation, explanation) • Your topic sentence = your assertion

  7. Ways to Improve # 2 • Your paragraph should look like this: • A (assertion – topic sentence) • P (proof) • E (explanation) • P (proof) • E (explanation) • P (proof) • E (explanation) • C (concluding sentence)

  8. Ways to Improve # 2 • Your assertion/topic sentence: • Title of text • Author (if known) • Reference to prompt • Ex. In “Small change adds up to millions” it is clear that Terry Fox has had an incredible impact on contemporary society. • Task # 1: • On your paper re-write your topic sentence following this format.

  9. Ways to Improve # 2 • Task # 2: • Highlight in your paragraph or write down three points which support the prompt.

  10. Ways to Improve # 3 • Use your sentences wisely • Don’t waste sentences giving a plot summary • If all you do is transfer information from the reading to your page, no thinking has happened! • Task: • Draw a line through all unnecessary sentences in your paragraph.

  11. Ways to Improve # 4 • Refer to the text for support. • This means, use quotations to support your points. • Task: • Find three quotes which support your points. • Ideally, one for each point.

  12. The Goal of Part A • To demonstrate your understanding of the text • To demonstrate that you can support an argument using textual evidence • Final Task: • Re-write Terry Fox paragraph • Plan first – I want to see this written out.
