  1. Integrated CEOS European Data Server: Phase 3Objectives & use case development An exploitation project funded by BNSC under the International Cooperation Programme - Phase 2 Project partners: ESYS plc Department of Geomatic Engineering, University College London footer

  2. Background CEOS CLASP (“CEOS Landsat And SRTM Project”) • ICP supported ICEDS (Phases 1 & 2) in 2004 as UK input into CEOS CLASP initiative • CLASP (2004-2005) coordinated by CEOS WGISS • CLASP objectives: • assist UN to provide developing countries with internet access to global mosaics of Landsat TM and SRTM data • encourage international agencies to host ‘continental’ datasets and make them available through the CEOS EO portal • make use of OGC interoperability standards ICEDS Phases 1 & 2 - achievements • Developed and established ICEDS WMS/WCS web service • Hosted SRTM and Landsat 5 TM data (Europe & Africa) • Produced guidelines document, including software scripts footer

  3. Timeline footer

  4. Phase 3 objectives • Engage users in the development process - capture of geo-information service needs, feedback and encourage technology transfer • Expand data sets offered by ICEDS - include near-global coverage (Landsat 5 TM and SRTM) • Promote ICEDS to stakeholder communities - CEOS, OGC, African geo-information community, UK EO community footer

  5. Use cases - objectives • To collect and understand the geo-web service needs of selected organisations/communities (African national remote sensing agencies, Reuters AlertNet/NGOs, CEOS) • To encourage user feedback and evaluation comments on the ICEDS web map service • To provide the opportunity for the transfer of ICEDS technology developments to interested organisations footer

  6. Use cases - outreach Reuters AlertNet / NGOs African Association of Remote Sensing of the Environment (AARSE) ESA TIGER Initiative African national remote sensing agencies IRE (Russia) CERSGIS (Ghana) GISTDA (Thailand) NRSCC (China) CEOS agencies (WGISS &WGCV) United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) FANR - SADC (Botswana) RECTAS (Nigeria) JAXA/ RESTEC (Japan) RCMRD (Kenya) CRASTE-LF (Morocco) CSIR (South Africa) NASA/JPL (USA) footer

  7. Achievements – use cases/promotion • Feedback on ICEDS web service from three national agencies in Africa (Botswana, South Africa & Nigeria). • Limited bandwidth was a common barrier to usability • But positive feedback once data is downloaded. • UNOOSA most effective outreach channel to African Agencies • Consultation/coordination with CEOS agencies on service interoperability • Promotion* of ICEDS at: • CEOS WGISS 19 & 20 • OGC/EOGEO • UNDP, cartography section meeting • STRM workshop *Funding for promotion activities funded from outside ICEDS project footer
