  1. Root Word Assignment Greek and Latin prefixes, suffixes, and roots!

  2. Why learn this??? This is a notecard homework assignment designed to help you with vocabulary. Understanding prefixes/suffixes/roots will help you not only in science, but in every subject!

  3. What to do… • You will be given a list of common roots, prefixes, and suffixes. • You will create a note card containing: • the root/prefix/suffix and its definition • a picture (in color) • two (2) words that contain the root/prefix/suffix • the definition of the words you chose • use each of the words you chose in a sentence showing you understand the meaning.

  4. What your notecard will look like… On the front – The root word The definition of the root word A picture of the root word (in color)

  5. What your notecard will look like… On the back- The definition of the word that contains the root A word that contains the root A sentence using the word, showing that you understand the meaning *** this example has 3 words, you are required to have 2.

  6. Things to remember… • Be sure to choose a word that contains the root, not just a word that has the same letters… • Example: • The root word anni- means year • Cannibal is NOT a word that contains the root word. • Eatting one’s own kind has nothing to do with “year”! • Anniversary is a word that contains the root word. • The root word lun- means light • Lunch is NOT a word that contains the root word. • lunch has nothing to do with “light”!

  7. Things to remember… Your cards need to be bound either by a ring or in a Ziploc bag. You will need a card containing your full name, block #, and “A” or “B” day on the top. Be sure to turn in your cards on time!

  8. Things to remember… Many of the words we use come from a root word. Once you pull off any prefixes or suffixes, the root will be normally at the front or the back of the remaining word.  If you have any questions while working on this assignment, please ask! Not understanding the assignment is not an excuse for not completing it!
