  1. Improve the Environment by Using Propane for Home Heating Improve the Environment by Using Propane for Home Heating Are you still using conventional heating systems that are powered by electricity and other fossil fuels? It might surprise you to learn that these systems could be harming the environment—especially if they are producing greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming. In some cases, they can be inefficient for home heating. Fireplaces, for instance, typically heat only the areas near or around them, so you may have to use supplemental heat sources like electric space heaters in other areas of the room, leading to higher energy consumption. One of the best ways to improve the environment and reduce your energy costs is by switching to propane home heating. Most traditional heating devices already have counterparts, which are powered by propane or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), so you should be able to find the right product that suits your needs. Why propane, you ask? Propane is produced mainly from crude oil refining and natural gas processing. More than 90 percent of propane being used in the US is domestically produced, and the rest is imported from Canada. The 1990 Clean Air Act and the 1992 Energy Policy Act recognize propane as a clean and efficient fuel, which you can use for cooking, cleaning, heating, and running certain types of vehicles and other appliances. The US Environmental Protection Agency tested propane-fueled vehicles and found that they produce 30 to 90 percent less carbon monoxide and around 50 percent less toxins and other smog-causing emissions compared to gasoline. Hence, propane for home heating can be the best thing you could consider if you want to minimize your carbon footprint and improve the quality of your indoor air. A propane furnace is found to have an average life span of 20 years, while electric heat pumps last only for about 14 years. It will cost less to repair propane-powered furnaces than electric heater, too. This way, propane home heating may help you save money from repairs, and lessen your contributions to landfills. Likewise, propane heating devices, like propane fireplaces, are easier to maintain, since they do not produce soot and ash. A propane fireplace is able to provide heat more efficiently and evenly than a typical wood fireplace, too.
