Important Vocabulary Consumer: a person who buys and uses products Pollutant: a harmful material that enters the environment Environmentally related diseases: diseases or illnesses caused by environmental factors (like Malaria, Lead Poisoning, Diarrhea) Pesticides: chemicals used to control/eliminate pests from crops/gardens Radiation: energy that can be potentially harmful to organisms if exposed or overexposed (ultra-violet, X-ray, microwave)

  7. Activity 2 Group of 3 Choose one influencing factor Make a collage with magazine clippings and drawings that illustrate that factor of influence Hang around room
  8. Consumer Rights Read, “Consumers Have Rights” Restate each right in your own words (Notes)
  9. Activity 3: Read the articles in the handout. Answer the questions in your notes about the reading.
  10. Activity 4: Group of 3 Identify a product you do not know very much about. Write down questions one could ask to decide whether the product was of good quality, a good buy, and would meet their needs. *EC: Call/Visit a store and record answers to these questions

Activity 5: Coupons/Sale ads/Internet Explain your coupon/ad to your partner The product, expiration date, limitations of the coupon (must spend certain amount of money, must buy two) *Create a grocery list for a healthy dinner. You have a budget of $10 to feed 2 people. Answer: 1. Were the coupons/sales helpful in saving money? 2. Do you think coupons might encourage people to buy something they would normally not buy? 3.) How does that affect someone’s budget? 4.) How can smart consumers use coupons to his/her advantage?

Tell them the problem and how you would like it to be solved. #4 If this person cannot help you, ask to see a manager or supervisor. Tell them the problem and how you would like it to be solved. Most problems will be taken care of by this level
  15. I am unsatisfied (4) #5 If you are not happy with the response, do not give up. Write a letter/email to the president of the company. Include in your letter: Your address and phone number The name and title of the person you are writing The name and serial number of the product Date and location of purchase State the problem Copy of receipt or warranty State the solution Request action within a reasonable amount of time
  16. I am unsatisfied #6 Finally if you don’t get any satisfaction locate the local Better Business Bureau in your area and find out how to register a consumer complaint.
  17. Activity 6: Last week you bought a new cell phone. The volume button does not work and it is so low you cannot hear the ring or people talking. You took it back to the store and they would not replace or fix it. Write a letter to the president of the company to request the repair of the phone or a replacement.
